Oxford International Junior Programmes offers a range of summertime ESL programmes at carefully chosen centres in the UK, Canada, and the US. Our programmes aim to create a study experience of educational value, of cultural interest, and, of course, full of fun and memories to take home. This role offers the opportunity to work with students ages 12\-18from all over the world.
Our Brooklyn summer program is based at the Long Island University\*, where students receive a combination of 15 hours English language tuition per week and a comprehensive programme of activities and excursions. The activity programme will include daytime and evening activities as well as half\-day and full\-day excursions to attractions and places of cultural interest.
We are currently looking for staff for contracts of various length from end\-of\-June to early August 2026 (programme dates are June 28 – August 2, 2026\). A limited number of residential positions are available. Full board accommodation included in residential position employment packages available.
The Role
As the Director of Studies (DoS), you will be responsible for all aspects of delivering a successful academic experience. You will manage a team of 5\-10 ESL teachers and ensure they are able to deliver engaging ESL lessons from the OIEG Junior Syllabus, in line with the standards set out in the Teachers’ Handbook. You will be the first resource for academic questions, both from students and staff.
The DoS is responsible for scheduling teachers, ensuring we have the correct number of teachers each week, assigning classes according to their skills and preferences, and managing teacher absences. In this role, you will be responsible for confirming teachers’ hours and submitting accurate information to our payroll team. New students arrive each week, and the Academic Director manages their initial assessment, including grammar tests, speaking interviews, and writing assessments. With information collected from the initial assessment, the Academic Director assigns students to the appropriate classes.
In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing academic quality, conducting regular classroom observations and providing feedback to the teaching team. Oxford International Junior Programmes provides course books and teachers’ books which are the foundation for planning and teaching, and the Director of Studies provides expertise on English language learning within this context.
You will also deal with student requests and questions regarding their levels and their progress. Most students will arrive in New York with a chaperone (Group Leader), who may be the student’s advocate and representative for academic concerns. You will also ensure that any student behavioral issues are dealt with appropriately, coordinating with the activity and residence staff as needed.
The Director of Studies coordinates a graduation ceremony each week for students finishing their course and ensures that each student receives a personalized graduation certificate.
### Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct placement testing and the required administration of academic staff,
- Decide which classes need to be run at which levels each week,
- Assign students to appropriate class based on results of placement tests,
- Ensure OIJP syllabus is delivered accurately and effectively to students,
- Provide academic support and expertise to teaching team,
- Provide an overview of the OIEG academic systems to Group Leaders as needed,
- Answer academic questions from Group Leaders and students.
- Direct student \& teacher inductions,
- Observe every teacher at least once and provide specific feedback,
- Schedule and assign teachers to appropriate classes,
- Monitor teacher absences and manage on\-call teachers as needed,
- Teach if and when necessary,
- Coordinate graduation ceremonies as needed,
- Ensure all students receive an accurate certificate of completion,
- Manage teacher payroll,
- Undertake essential administrative tasks e.g., monitor the completion of class registers and work records; administer and mark course assessment tasks when
- required; assist teachers and monitor completion of end of course reports,
- Monitor academic resources,
- Ensure sufficient appropriate classrooms are booked.
- Strategies for effective teaching and classroom management of junior learners \& commitment to student\-centered learning,
- Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to cope with changing priorities,
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- TESL/TESOL certificate from a TESL Canada approved institution or equivalent (eg. CELTA/DELTA).
- B.Ed, with experience in ESL teaching and team management.
- Your experience with academic management.
- Your organizational style, and experience with organizational systems.
