Key Responsibilities

Student Support:

  • Provide individualized and small\-group coaching during vocational tasks to support the achievement of goals outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Teach and reinforce essential job skills, including task initiation, problem\-solving, time management, and workplace communication.
  • Encourage and support students in developing independence by gradually reducing prompts and external support.
  • Document and track student progress toward vocational goals, providing regular updates to the Transition and Vocational Director.
  • On\-Campus Vocational Opportunities:

  • Supervise students in on\-campus work roles (e.g., cafeteria, concession stand, clerical tasks, cleaning duties) to build foundational vocational skills.
  • Manage and oversee student responsibilities in the lunchroom, including serving, concession stand operation, and post\-lunch cleanup.
  • Identify and create new on\-campus work opportunities aligned with students' interests and abilities.
  • Off\-Campus Vocational Support:

  • Safely transport 1\-3 students to and from community\-based job sites using school vans or buses. A valid School Bus Permit or CDL obtained through the Secretary of State is required (testing fees are covered by the school).
  • Remain on\-site with students during their work shifts (typically 45\-60 minutes) to provide coaching and support.
  • Assist students aged 16 and older in developing job\-specific skills, task engagement, and independence at off\-campus job sites.
  • Competitive Employment Support:

  • Provide job readiness training, including resume building, job application completion, and interview practice.
  • Assist students with job searches, applying for positions, and understanding workplace expectations. Teach professionalism and soft skills essential for long\-term employment success.
  • Post\-Secondary Planning:

  • Guide students interested in post\-secondary education by supporting their exploration of college programs, vocational training opportunities, and application processes.
  • Assist students in identifying strengths, interests, and career goals to align with suitable post\-secondary options.
  • Workplace Integration:

  • Model professional behavior and reinforce workplace expectations to help students integrate into diverse work environments.
  • Collaborate with community employers to create supportive and inclusive work experiences.
  • Address workplace challenges by problem\-solving with students and employers to support job success.
  • Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a consistent work schedule and communicate effectively with the Transition and Vocational Director.
  • Participate in all required professional development courses and workshops provided by the school.
  • Report student behavior concerns and complete necessary documentation promptly.
  • Collaborate with related service teams to prepare and implement supportive tools (e.g., visual aids, work lists, timers) tailored to each student's needs.
  • Ensure confidentiality regarding student information and refrain from sharing student details on social media or in public forums.
  • Qualifications Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in special education, vocational rehabilitation, or a related field preferred.
  • Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is highly preferred.
  • Experience in workforce development, job coaching, or educational support roles is a plus.
  • Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively support students, families, and team members.
  • Ability to adapt to students' unique needs and foster a positive, inclusive work environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage documentation and track student progress.
  • Patience, empathy, and dedication to supporting student success.
  • Knowledge of job readiness training, employment practices, and workplace safety.
  • Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must obtain a School Bus Permit through the Secretary of State (testing fees covered by Clare Woods Academy) within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Must obtain an ISBE Paraprofessional License and have it registered with the State of Illinois prior to your start date.
  • Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist students in various work settings for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift and carry materials or equipment as needed.
  • Work Schedule:

  • Monday \- Friday, 8:15 a.m. \- 3:15 p.m. ( No Option for Remote Work)
  • Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting Rate: Applicants without prior experience working with our specific student demographic can expect a starting rate of $17/hour.
  • Experience Matters: While we welcome those new to the field, candidates with relevant professional experience will be prioritized and may be eligible for a higher starting rate based on their background.
  • Growth \& Stability: Staff receive an annual COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) wage increase and Winter and End of Year bonuses, contingent upon the organization's annual budget.
