Overview of the Position The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office for the Western District of Louisiana is accepting applications for a PC Systems Administrator in the Lafayette, Louisiana office. The incumbent performs work related to workstation and server administration, end\-user support, system and application maintenance and troubleshooting, and computer security. The incumbent is responsible for recommending, planning, and installing new systems, products, and applications.

Position Description

- Recommend, install, configure, and provide technical support for complex administrative and operations specific national applications, including developing new features. Maintain version applicability and local functionality of user applications, such as: MS Windows, MS Office 365\. Provide technical support and oversee maintenance of telephone systems and audio/visual systems, as required.
- Provide setup and support for mobile computing devices and remote access (laptops, iPads, mobile phones, etc.)
- Answer help desk requests received via phone, email and chat sessions. Diagnose, research, and document solutions to these requests.
- Determine and recommend computer software or hardware required to install new systems and applications, or alter existing systems/applications. Diagnose hardware and custom off\-the\-shelf software problems and replace defective components or design software fixes.
- Analyze, isolate, and solve complex system problems utilizing technical resources. Diagnose and remedy computing system failures, both hardware and software.
- Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, and all configurations. Determine hardware and/or software requirements and recommend changes to improve systems and configurations.
- Determine upgrade schedules and software standards for personal computers and other systems. Develop upgrade procedures and plan for future growth.
- Maintain, install, and update desktop computers, including new product evaluation and software compatibility analysis. Maintain automated management systems for imaging, software updates, and patch management.
- Maintain computer security resources on all workstations, including anti\-virus and firewall systems. Assist with server security systems, as required.
- Assist with network systems, including file server and user account administration, backup management, disaster recovery and connectivity problem solving. Perform system start\-up and shut down procedures.
- Prepare written instructions for users and IT staff, which are clear and effective. Train users to work with computer systems and programs. Prepare reports and memoranda regarding complex automation issues with a focus on the reader

- Applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent
- Two years of advanced experience with installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of information technology systems \& networks
- Ability to identify new products and solutions to implement new technologies

Primary Job Focus and Scope
The primary focus of the job is planning for and implementing highly complex information technology projects and troubleshooting complex hardware and software problems based on understanding the needs and priorities of the court and end users. PC Systems Administrators gather and analyze information to determine and act on or recommend the best course of action. Incumbents support the front\-end of the court unit’s information technology systems and have frequent significant interactions with end\-users. Presenting knowledge and professionalism ensures the trust and confidence of end\-users. The work of the court unit is dependent on its automated systems. Incumbents ensure that systems and applications operate as they should. The potential consequences of errors could result in systems and applications that perform poorly and/or do not meet user needs. This could result in decreased productivity, increased costs and lost data, and reflect poorly on the court unit and the court as a whole.
Complexity and Decision Making
Computer systems have components with a multitude of interrelationships that can introduce problems, and also hardware components that can fail. Choosing among different approaches, each with a potential for harm, is a regular requirement of incumbents. Incumbents must consider efficiency and economy in evaluating alternatives, while ensuring systems operate with little or no disruption. Incumbents work independently and frequently make fast decisions and implement corrective action, often without full information. Technology is fast paced in this area and the incumbent must remain current in the field in order to make sound recommendations regarding new systems, equipment, and software. Decisions are made within the context of professional and judiciary standards, broad policies, or general goals. Incumbents must apply advanced technical skills and thorough knowledge and experience with court policies, practices, guidelines and information resource management bulletins in order to anticipate and resolve complex problems, questions, or situations.
Interactions with Judiciary Contacts
Within the judiciary, incumbents have contact with peers, management, judges, chambers staff, and court unit staff for the purpose of responding to requests for information and solving problems and managing information technology projects. Contacts are also with sources such as functional specialists in the automation regional training centers, circuit executive staff and the AO on equipment/software problems., new or revised applications, and projected system changes.
Interactions with External Contacts
Outside contacts are with equipment and software representatives from commercial organizations concerning problems with currently installed equipment, procurement of software and hardware, and to keep current with the technology being used in court.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office setting. Duties sometimes require working during non\-business hours. Duties include occasional travel to district offices, training and seminars. Physical effort may be required in moving, connecting, or troubleshooting moderately heavy equipment.
