JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Finance is a leadership position responsible for overseeing day\-to\-day accounting operations and ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial records for both the California Alliance of Child and Family Services 501c6 organization and the Catalyst Center, its affiliated 501c3 foundation. The Director of Finance serves as the senior accounting lead and supports the V.P. of Finance and Operations by producing reliable financial data, maintaining strong internal controls, and managing grants and contracts accounting.
This role supervises the Senior Accountant and A/R\-A/P Accountant and ensures that accounting processes, reconciliations, and reporting are completed accurately and on schedule. While the V.P. of Finance \& Operations retains responsibility for financial strategy, budgeting leadership, board reporting, and organizational planning, the Director provides essential financial support, analysis, and operational execution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED)
Accounting Operations \& Financial Management
· Oversee all daily accounting functions for both entities, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash management.
· Ensure accurate and timely month\-end and year\-end close processes.
· Maintain clean and well\-documented financial records in accordance with nonprofit GAAP.
· Ensure proper separation of accounting for the 501c6 and 501c3, including restricted and unrestricted funds.
· Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and account analyses prepared by accounting staff.
· Serve as a strategic partner to the Vice President of Finance \& Operations and Leadership Team, providing financial analysis, guidance, and recommendations to support organizational decision\-making.
· Co\-Lead multi\-year financial planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling to assess risk, opportunity, and resource allocation.
· Support the Board of Directors by preparing and presenting clear, accurate, and timely financial information.
Financial Reporting
· Prepare internal financial statements, schedules, and supporting documentation for review by the V.P. of Finance and Operations.
· Provide variance explanations, trend data, and detailed back up to support higher\-level financial reporting.
· Ensure consistency, accuracy, and completeness of financial information used for leadership and external reporting.
· Respond to internal financial data requests from leadership and program staff as directed by the V.P. of Finance and Operations.
· Assist with cash flow forecasting, liquidity planning, and reserve management to ensure the organization can meet short\- and long\-term obligations.
Budgeting \& Financial Reporting
· Develop and monitor key financial performance indicators (e.g., operating margin, days cash on hand, liquidity ratios) and report trends to leadership and the Board.
· Co\-Lead the annual operating budgeting process in collaboration with executive leadership and department heads.
· Enter approved budgets into the accounting system and maintain budget controls.
· Monitor budget\-to\-actual performance, analyze variances, and provide clear explanations and recommendations.
· Prepare and review internal financial reports and dashboards for leadership and program teams.
· Ensure the preparation of accurate financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
Grant \& Contract Financial Management
· Manage financial management of grants and contracts, including budgeting, schedules, invoicing, drawdowns, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funder regulations (including Uniform Guidance, if applicable).
· Partner with program and operations staff to ensure alignment between programmatic activities and financial performance and timely coding of grant\-related expenses.
Audit, Internal Controls, \& Systems
· Serve as lead staff for the annual independent audit.
· Maintain and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
· Identify and recommend process improvements to strengthen accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
· Oversee accounting system configuration, chart of accounts, and cost center structure.
· Ensure proper documentation and retention of financial records.
Supervision \& Team Leadership
· Supervise the Senior Accountant and A/R\-A/P Accountant
· Review staff work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
· Provide training and guidance on nonprofit accounting practices, grant compliance, and internal controls.
· Coordinate workload, deadlines, and priorities within the accounting team.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises employees in the finance department, including the Senior Accountant and Accountant \& Special Projects Assistant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. 5\+ years of nonprofit accounting experience, preferably with multi\-entity organizations. Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, and restricted funding. Experience with grants and contract accounting and audit preparation. Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred. Proficiency with accounting systems and Excel. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
