Horizons is an award\-winning, tuition\-free academic and enrichment program serving students from under\-resourced communities. We advance educational equity by building long\-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning. Horizons Greater Philadelphia (HGP) was founded in 2020 to expand Horizons programming in the Philadelphia area and support existing area Horizons affiliates which include Horizons at Episcopal Academy, Horizons at Greene Street Friends School, Horizons at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School, and Horizons at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. HGP is an affiliate of Horizons National, which has over 70 programs in 21 states. HGP is a 501(c)(3\) organization and an affiliate of the Horizons National Network.
This summer, HGP served over 400 public and charter school students with the goal of expanding to build capacity to serve 1,000 students. To achieve this goal, we are committed to building new partnerships with local educational institutions to launch thriving and sustainable community\-based Horizons programs across Greater Philadelphia and provide more opportunities for students to learn, grow, and achieve their goals. About the Position
The Assistant Director of Advancement plays a central role in advancing Horizons Greater Philadelphia’s fundraising and donor engagement efforts. Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, this role will help implement HGP’s fundraising strategy while building the operational systems that support sustainable revenue growth.
This position blends fundraising execution with operational leadership. The Assistant Director of Advancement will help build and manage the fundraising systems, partnerships, and donor engagement strategies that support Horizons Greater Philadelphia’s continued growth.
The ideal candidate is a proactive, relationship\-oriented professional who thrives in a collaborative organization and enjoys both strategic thinking and hands\-on execution. Because Horizons Greater Philadelphia operates with a small, collaborative team, the ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and taking ownership of initiatives from concept through completion.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy and Execution
- Support implementation of HGP’s annual fundraising plan in partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors
- Manage the grant pipeline, including prospect research, proposal development, submission, and reporting
- Contribute to the development of HGP’s long\-term fundraising strategy, including identifying new revenue opportunities and strengthening donor engagement across the region.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with foundation, corporate, and individual donors
- Coordinate corporate sponsorship opportunities and partnership engagement
- Maintain an active schedule of donor communications, stewardship outreach, and follow\-up activities
- Develop and manage corporate sponsorship opportunities tied to regional events and initiatives
- Coordinate fundraising and donor engagement events, including Horizons Giving Day and site visits in the greater Philadelphia area
- Identify opportunities to deepen corporate engagement through volunteer opportunities, visibility partnerships, and employee engagement
- Manage and maintain HGP’s donor database (Network for Good), ensuring accurate records and donor engagement tracking
- Maintain the fundraising pipeline and track revenue progress against annual goals
- Coordinate donor acknowledgments, stewardship communications, and reporting requirements
- Support gift processing and donation tracking in coordination with financial systems
- Prepare donor research, briefing materials, and meeting preparation for Executive Director cultivation meetings
- Track follow\-up actions and relationship management steps after donor engagements
- Support the Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee in identifying prospects and expanding networks
- Prepare development updates and reports for Board and committee meetings
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop fundraising communications and donor impact materials
- Help coordinate stewardship communications, impact updates, and donor engagement content
- Contribute to storytelling that highlights student impact and strengthens donor relationships
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 5\+ years of nonprofit fundraising, development, or related experience
- Demonstrated experience with grant writing and foundation relations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Experience working with donor databases or CRM systems
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in a small team environment
- Experience managing corporate partnerships or sponsorships
- Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising events and donor engagement strategies
- Experience supporting board fundraising efforts
