Assistant General Manager

Ostro Steel Structures
Louisville, GA, US
Posted Mar 28, 2026

Ostro Steel Structures is a passionate group of designers, builders, welders, metalworkers, fabricators and tinkerers. Throughout the US and Caribbean, we engineer, fabricate and install custom pre\-engineered metal building systems of all shapes, sizes and use cases. Our fabrication skews toward larger commercial projects, although we also offer a full line of smaller structures and “barndominium” designs as well. Quality accredited under IAS AC472 and a manufacturer member of the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), we’re fanatics when it comes to quality and customer experience.

We transitioned to new ownership in 2021 when our company’s founder retired after 25 years in the business. Following the changeover, we embarked a multi\-million\-dollar capex expansion plan to create a stable and scalable foundation supporting our growing client network. As part of this plan, we made huge investments in new machinery and added over 100,000 square feet to our production plant in Louisville, GA. Our growing team of about 85 colleagues now spans sales, estimating, engineering, drafting, project management, purchasing, welding, rollforming, warehousing, heavy trucking and construction.

With these ambitious projects now complete, our current GM is starting to transition to a new role focused on business development and sales growth. We’re therefore looking for an experienced operations manager to assist our GM and learn the business, with the ultimate goal of promoting this candidate to General Manager within the next 6\-12 months. This position combines the day\-to\-day management responsibilities of a production manager with more expansive cross\-functional elements of an operations manager. Competency and culture matter to us, so we’re not in a rush, but we’ll move very fast for the right candidate.

Competency only loosely correlates with formal education in our experience. Some of our employees have advanced degrees; some didn’t finish high school. You often wouldn’t know which. For us, competency is the required mix of experience, education and people skills to get the job done correctly and on\-time. There are lots of different recipes—the final product is what matters. is also tough to define. Communication, facilitation, personal development, respect and “servant” leadership tend to be the core elements at Ostro. We like consensus\-building over hierarchy, but we understand there are times when decisions need to be made and someone needs to make them.

All Roads Lead to the General Manager:

· You’re the central node between our estimators, designers, engineers, drafters, purchasers, fabricators and, most importantly, customers

· You work with our sales and estimating team to understand our pipeline, pricing structure, and market feedback

· You work with our engineering and drafting team to ensure timeliness and accuracy of drawings and work product feeding into the production floor

· You work with our procurement team to set purchasing strategies balancing availability of material for production, inventory carriage costs, ROA and overall pricing

· You work with our production foremen to regulate scheduling, quality and shop standards

· You work with our shipping team to ensure what needs to go on a truck actually gets onto the truck

· You work with our project management team to help guide our projects through our process

· You work with our EHS manager to make sure people go home just like they came in for the day

· You work with our accounting team and ownership on budgeting, reporting and financial results

· You build relationships with our customers to ensure the product meets their needs and to solicit feedback in the event it doesn’t

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3\-5 years of prior experience in an assistant general manager, production manager, operations manager or similar role touching on multiple functional areas
  • A background in metals (welding, rollforming, purchasing, etc.) is not strictly required, but would be a huge help
  • A background in or adjacent to the construction industry would be very beneficial to understand the underpinnings of our process and timelines
  • Familiarity with production planning and machine programming software preferred
  • General knowledge of machinery, including basic mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Six Sigma or similar operational efficiency training preferred (but certainly open to someone with copious common sense and operational intuition)
  • Facility with supply chain management, including lean and just\-in\-time principles, forecasting and forward purchasing
  • Experience managing and continually improving an EHS program and general knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926
  • Demonstrated proficiency with P\&L statements and management reporting preferred
  • You’re the kind of person who:
  • Wants to walk the floor most mornings to check in with everyone on the shop floor as well as everyone in the office to make sure everything is running smoothly and people have what they need to succeed that day
  • Actually picks up the phone and call people—emails might get the job done in a pinch, but they certainly don’t build relationships. If you can’t pick up the phone and have a conversation with another human being, this is not the job for you
  • Can write a polished email with grammar and punctuation that isn’t off\-putting to customers
  • Can just crush Microsoft Office suite, in particular Word and Excel
