POSITION SUMMARY: The main focus of the Adoption Counselor is to place pets in safe and loving forever homes that fit the individual needs of each animal in our care, while counseling and guiding our adopters in their journey as a pet owner. The Adoption Counselor represents Lake Humane Society in a professional and courteous manner and provides quality guest service at the shelter’s front desk. Adoption Counselors must be comfortable working in a fast\-paced environment with strong organizational and communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. An associate’s degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 2 years customer service experience in a fast\-paced environment is required.
  • Experience in handling animals in a shelter or veterinary clinic setting is preferred.
  • KNOWLEDGE \& SKILLS:

  • Ability to work in a fast\-paced environment while still remaining focused, driven, and on task.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed.
  • Organized and detail oriented. Must be able to effectively prioritize duties.
  • Knowledge of animal breeds, disease, medical conditions, behavior, and handling.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) required. Knowledge of shelter software (PetPoint) a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to provide outstanding guest services, particularly with a variety of client situations.
  • Ability to learn, retain and communicate a wide variety of information.
  • ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greet guests in an appropriate manner as they enter facility.
  • Supervises volunteers who assist with the front desk and record keeping.
  • Creating animal bios which will be placed on cage cards and entered into Pet Point for website visibility.
  • Checks voicemail messages throughout the day and makes follow\-up calls.
  • Ensures lost animal reports are recorded in the computer and monitors morning and closing checklists are completed.
  • Committed to building lasting relationships with our adopters and making them feel comfortable, appreciated, and supported.
  • Provides quality in\-person and telephone guest services to all potential adopters, both on and off site.
  • Answers questions and provides accurate information on LHS policy and procedures.
  • Extend the organization’s genuine gratitude for donors, volunteers, adopters, and supporters in all interactions.
  • Assist with in\-kind donations, thanking donor and providing receipt for each donation given.
  • Educates clients on responsible animal guardianship, animal care and local ordinances.
  • Always treats all animals and people with the utmost respect, kindness, and compassion.
  • Engages in conversation with the clients to make their experience personal and positive and helps introduce adoptable animals to potential adopters.
  • Conducts animal adoption counseling, had a good understanding of SAFER evaluations, medical history, insurance information and any other paperwork that needs to be covered with an adopter.
  • Providing excellent guest services to both internal and external clients.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized workspace in designated areas, including but not limited to front desk, visiting rooms, restroom, pet shop and all public areas.
  • Learns basic duties and support other departments and staff within shelter and annex.
  • Conducts adoptions from start to finish, responsible for all paperwork, data entry, and payment processing.
  • SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: This position is full\-time, requiring 40 hours per week. The schedule will require four 10 hour shifts (3 weekdays and 1 weekend day). Flexibility is required, and the Adoption Counselor schedule will require some nights, weekends, and/or holidays. The Adoption Counselor may also need to work nights and weekends for events, trainings, shelter meetings, and other special circumstances as directed by the Shelter Manager, and/or Executive Director. Adoption Counselors will also be required to attend off\-site adoption events.
