Position Summary -------------------- Under the supervision of a Library supervisor; Performs a variety of paraprofessional duties in the Library including customer service; checking out materials; information and reference service, instruction, and circulation functions. Assists patrons with library systems and questions in\-person, via phone and email; monitors library materials; coordinates various backend processes; troubleshoots equipment; coordinates projects and activities of others; participates in Library Outreach activities; identifies areas of opportunity and shares suggestions to address deficiencies in processes and procedures. Distinguishing Characteristics: Under direct supervision, performs entry\-level professional duties. Employees at this level initially work under close supervision while performing duties and learning the procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility. Performs general and in\-depth questioning to respond appropriately to information needs. Assists and instructs patrons in using the library's resources, services, computers, printers, copiers, fax, vending, other equipment and software. Assists patrons with directional and procedural inquiries. Creates and maintains library customer accounts. Uses search and retrieval techniques to locate appropriate print, audiovisual, and electronic materials. Understands, follows, and interprets library policies and procedures. Assures confidentiality of library customer account records. Participates in Library outreach activities. Assists and backs up other library units as assigned. Assists with opening and closing procedures. Participates in maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the Library. Performs other related duties as requested, assigned, or required. Accounts Services – Mobile Services Representative: Coordinates the Library’s book locker and smart book return service, located offsite. Processes, transports, and retrieves library holds and returned materials to and from the Library and remote locations. Maintain schedule of book locker/smart return activities including multiple trips to the book locker/smart return location each week to ensure timely service delivery to patrons. Monitor and address software communications from the book locker and smart return equipment. Ensure book locker and smart return are in good working order by performing regular inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Track and communicate data related to book locker and smart return usage. Safely and effectively operate a City vehicle or van. Report mileage and vehicle issues, as required. Assist in Accounts Services during work hours when not running book locker operations, including all assignments for Accounts Services listed above. Assists with implementation of library marketing, programs and events to encourage use of remote services. Coordinates with library staff on programming at remote service locations. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Position Qualifications --------------------------- Education: Two (2\) years of college required. Experience: Six (6\) months of experience in customer service required. Two (2\) years of library experience preferred. Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements. Licenses and Certifications: None Conditions of Employment: Must submit to and pass a criminal background, pre\-employment drug test. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and some split shifts as required. Other Requirements: Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Account Services Representative and Mobile Accounts Services Representative require a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy. An applicant who does not possess a Texas Driver's License or proper class, will be allowed ten (10\) working days after a job offer is made to obtain proper licensing. A pre\-placement medical examination, and job placement assessment (JPA) is required. Account Services Representative and Mobile Accounts Services Representative: Processing and recording payments, money handling and cashiering. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and physically moving library materials, furniture, equipment, and other items is required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Additionally, the Account Services Representative and Mobile Account Services Representative position involves a mix of office and outdoor responsibilities, mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to climb and descend stairs, and to operate a motor vehicle, visit various City sites, and works primarily in an outdoor environment. Employees work primarily in the field and may be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road and/or land hazards when setting up outdoor locations. The position requires loading and unloading bins of library materials from a vehicle; lift, reach, crouch, and kneel to move and retrieve materials; carry, push, and pull to transport materials in and out of the library. There may be long periods of sitting in between locations. Employees must regularly lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 40 pounds with or without assistance. Typical daily lifting requirements for certain tasks range from 10 to 25 pounds.
