### Description \& Requirements

JOB SUMMARY:

We are looking for a Director of Applied AI Engineering to build and lead the team that puts AI into production\- not as an experiment, not as an analytics layer, but as core product capability that transforms how One Call operates.

This is a product engineering role. You will build systems that do things: parse a faxed referral in real time and extract structured clinical data from it. Classify incoming documents and route them without human intervention. Power agentic workflows that replace manual coordination with intelligent automation. Your team’s work ships to production, runs at scale, and directly impacts the operational experience for adjusters, providers, and patients.

This is not data warehousing, BI, or analytics function. You are building the AI\-powered capabilities and platform primitives that product teas across One Call consume to create intelligent, automated experiences. You own the engineering foundation\- the extraction pipelines, the classification models, the LLM orchestration patterns, the data contracts and quality standards\- that make AI systems reliable, trustworthy, and production\-grade.

This role reports to the VP of Strategic Engineering.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES \& RESPONSIBILITIES:

WHAT YOU’LL BUILD:

  • AI\-powered document processing: Real\-time extraction, classification, and enrichment pipelines that turn unstructured inputs (faxes, PDFs, clinical documents) into structured, actionable data\- at production scale, with production reliability.
  • LLM orchestration and operationalization: Production patterns for integrating large language models into business workflows\- prompt management, output validation, guardrails, fallback strategies, and continuous evaluation.
  • Intelligent automation capabilities: Agentic systems and AI\-assisted decisioning that replace manual operational workflows with intelligent, auditable automation.
  • AI Platform foundations: Shared data contracts, quality standards, and reusable services that ensure AI systems across One Call operate on consistent, trusted, well\-governed information.
  • Evaluation and observability: Metrics, monitoring, and feedback loops that make AI system behavior measurable, debuggable, and continuously improvable.
  • WHAT YOU’LL OWN:

  • The AI Platform strategy, technical direction, and execution\- end to end.
  • A growing engineering team (US and Mexico\-based) of senior engineers building production AI systems.
  • The standards and patterns that define how AI capabilities are built, tested, deployed, and monitored across the organization.
  • Close partnership with Product, Architecture, and Application teams to ensure platform capabilities map to real business outcomes\- not technology for its own sake.
  • EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience.
  • You’ve built and led engineering teams. 7\+ years of engineering leadership, including managing senior engineers or platforms teams. You know how to hire, develop, and retain strong engineers and how to create an environment where they do their best work.
  • You’ve shipped AI to production. Not prototyped it. Not demoed it. Shipped it\- with monitoring, with fallbacks, with the unglamourous reliability engineering that makes the difference between a demo and a product. You know the gap between “it works in a notebook” and “it works at 2 AM on a Saturday” and you’ve closed that gap repeatedly.
  • You think in products, not models. You care about what the system does for the user, not what architecture it uses. Model selection, prompt engineering, and pipeline design are means to an end\- the end is a capability that changes how people work.
  • You’ve operationalized LLMs. You have hands\-on experience building systems that use large language models in production workflows\- document extraction, classification, summarization, structured output generation, or similar. You understand the unique reliability, evaluation, and cost challenges of LLM\-powered systems.
  • You’re comfortable in regulated environments. Experienced operating in healthcare, financial services, or other compliance\-driven industries (HIPAA, SOC2, or equivalent). You understand that “move fast and break things” has a different meaning when PHI is involved.
  • You’re comfortable leading distributed teams. Experience managing engineers across US and/or Mexico time zones.
  • ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS \& ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work in an environment that aligns with the company's diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging standards.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate our core values of Think Big, Go Fast, Deliver Awe, Win Together and Care Deeply.
  • PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS \& WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position will be performed in the colleague’s home. Work\-from\-home requirements include the colleague’s ability to set up computer equipment within their home office. Occasional in\-person team meetings may be required depending on the position.
  • This job is primarily sedentary and may involve repetitive motions; the colleague must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, operate a computer and other office equipment, assess information and files stored electronically, and converse/exchange accurate information with others, simultaneously.
  • The colleague must be able to discern text displayed on a monitor, input data into specific fields using a keyboard, and adjust focus to distances of up to three feet.
  • The colleague must have the ability to learn new tasks, follow established processes, maintain focus, complete tasks independently, complete multiple tasks simultaneously, communicate professionally with colleagues and customers, and complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity requirement.
  • The colleague must be able to manage moderate to significant mental stress as a result of, but not limited to, a dynamic and heavy workload.

Please be advised that job descriptions typically change over time as business needs, job requirements, and employee skill levels change. As such, One Call retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position at any time.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment regardless to race, color, religion, sex, nationality, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other status protected by law.
