2026 Marion County Fair Office Specialist 2 Temporary Staff:

Temporary employees for the Marion County Fair typically start at Step 1 $21\.49 an hour.

This recruitment will be used to fill two (2\) temporary staff vacancies for the 2026 Marion County Fair

This is a temporary seasonal administrative position working in the Marion County Fair office under the supervision of the Fair Program Coordinator. The main objective of the administrative staff is to work with various event/activity point people (fair board members, the Event Coordinator and others) to produce one big event\- the Marion County Fair.

If you are a college student majoring in event coordination, communications, marketing, public relations, business, or another related field this opportunity will give valuable experience planning a major event. Applicants should have strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Office applications.

The office administrative tasks include commercial and food vendor coordination including registration, booth assignments, tracking of booth fees, etc. Customer service includes addressing walk\-in customers, answering phones, selling tickets and tracking/distributing entry tickets to fair partners. General office tasks include database entries, updating forms, developing Word and Excel documents, and more.

The position is one month in duration\- the middle of June through the middle of July. Successful candidates work 4\-hour shifts, three days a week, the first three weeks. The fourth week, participants work 8 plus hours daily for a season total of approximately 90 hours.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Independently perform a variety of responsible administrative support activities to promote and maintain effective program services, according to established practice and procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the general supervision of a higher level administrative or professional employee, who assigns work, sets goals and reviews work for accuracy, completeness and compliance with department and program policies and goals.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification; however, may provide training and give instruction to volunteers, interns, and other office staff.

Typical Duties \- Duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Accepting an assignment to perform work in a higher or lower class for a limited period is a requirement of all classifications.

  • Receive and transfer business calls on a multiple\-line system; provide information relating to county, department, and/or program services; transfer or refer calls to proper source; interpret office policy to convey information about services.
  • Greet the public and/or clients and direct individuals to appropriate staff; assist the public in completing forms and applications.
  • Make appointments for clients with appropriate staff members; maintain office calendars and schedules; schedule, organize, and coordinate meetings; make travel, lodging, and conference arrangements; take, prepare, and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Effectively operate specialized office equipment; order office supplies and equipment and maintain inventory; assist in planning, coordinating and organizing office relocations.
  • Type a variety of documents from draft or dictation into suitable formats; compose routine correspondence; sort data and create reports using appropriate computer functions; proofread text and correct for grammar, clarity, punctuation, spelling, and format.
  • Monitor, gather and document information in accordance with program requirements; post records and makes adjustments or corrections to records; compile and maintain data for budgeting and billing purposes; process transactions; compute or verify data, fees or payments; prepare and make cash deposits.
  • Effectively uses a variety of computer systems and software; enter data associated with department reports, provision of client services, client histories, quantitative data, and personnel reports; identify and resolve simple hardware and software problems.
  • Create, retrieve from, and maintain complex and specialized filing systems; conduct file and record searches; index and cross index records; micro\-films records; logs documents for public record; update and purge files, cassettes, tapes or discs according to department/division guidelines.

  • EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • High school diploma, or equivalent;
  • AND

  • One year of general office experience;
  • OR

  • Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
  • This assignment is represented by a union.
  • This is a part\-time,
  • temporary job, which is eligible for overtime.

  • Typical Work Schedule: Monday \- Friday, days. This position will start out working 20 hours per week and will increase in hours leading up to and during the week of the Marion County Fair. The week of the fair includes working Saturday and Sunday and evening hours.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and techniques; arithmetic and general record keeping/bookkeeping practices; modern office equipment and machinery and their intended use; a variety of computer systems and software; and basic knowledge of English composition, spelling and grammar.

    Skill and ability to type at an acceptable rate of speed; access and use various computer systems and software; accurately and effectively perform the various assigned tasks and duties following general procedure and program policies; meet and assist clients, staff, and the general public in a courteous, professional manner; understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions, communication, and procedures; apply newly assigned procedures and practices to specific work assignments; and provide backup to other positions as needed.

    PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS

    Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full\-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Questions about your student loan eligibility should be directed to your loan servicer or the US Department of Education.

    VISA SPONSORSHIP

    Marion County does not offer VISA sponsorship. Within three days of hire, you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I\-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. Marion County is an E\-Verify employer and will use E\-Verify to confirm that hires are authorized to work in the United States.
