This position will be responsible for leading the property team in Colorado Springs that handles the Natural Gas and Corporate segments. The candidate will be involved with review and/or approval related to monthly accounting close, income/expense variance analysis, account reconciliations and internal/external reporting. We offer a hybrid work schedule (Monday through Wednesday in office, Thursday and Friday remote). Work location is Houston Headquarters.
Position Description:
- Manage the accounting staff of eleven. This includes performance assessment, professional development, organization planning, etc.
- Build and lead the team to drive continuous improvement in systems, processes, and performance standards. Work with natural gas and corporate accounting teams as needed.
- Oversee the fixed asset and project areas to ensure that accounting is compliant with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Oversee the month end accounting close, and review budget and forecast depreciation variance analysis.
- Review and approve Journal Entries as needed. Review and approve account balance sheet reconciliations as needed.
- Monitor capital construction projects to confirm closes to fixed assets timely.
- Assist in reimbursable project tracking and billings for natural gas segment.
- Oversee the preparation of natural gas property footnotes for SEC and GAAP reporting. Oversee preparation of natural gas property pages for FERC Form 2 reporting.
- Various reporting and analysis as needed. Other tasks as needed and assigned.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and other requirements of Sarbanes/Oxley
- Learn and apply various processes and systems within the Property Accounting Department, including but not limited to internal computer systems of CARS, PSA, Lawson Query Tool and Lawson Reports
- Be a power user of KM’s financial software (Lawson) in areas of activities, assets and journal entries.
- Respond in a timely manner to data requests from internal and external auditors, tax departments and others.
- Develop and maintain a positive working relationship between and with customers, managers, and employees within and outside of the department.
- Work closely with other Property area in Houston handling CO2, Terminals and Products segments, including preparing consolidated reports needed for internal and external auditors.
- Deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Maintain a regular, dependable attendance, and high level of professionalism.
- May at times be required to work non\-traditional hours, including holidays.
- 10 or more years accounting experience.
- 5 or more years of managerial experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. CPA a plus.
- Strong knowledge of property accounting, specifically regulatory FERC property accounting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to solve complex problems through solution\-oriented analysis and cost effective solutions.
- Ability to work with all levels of the organization.
- Self\-starter and initiative. Must be able to perform required and expected duties with minimal supervision.
- Ability to undertake large amounts of work in a prioritized and organized fashion, and to timely and successfully complete multiple tasks often under strict deadlines.
- Able to multi\-task, be meticulous and have strong organizational skills.
- Strong working knowledge of accounting systems. Experience with Lawson preferred.
- MS Office Proficient – Excel, Word, Access and Outlook Applications
