About the Role The Accounting Manager works closely with the Director of Accounting and the Finance team to manage day\-to\-day accounting operations, ensure timely and accurate close and reporting processes, and maintain complete, accurate, and well\-documented records for AUW. This role provides review and oversight of assigned accounting work, supervises assigned Finance team members, supports accurate financial reporting, and ensures accounting deadlines and documentation requirements are met. The Accounting Manager also escalates complex or higher\-risk matters to the Director of Accounting as appropriate. The ideal candidate is an experienced accounting leader who can independently balance hands\-on accounting work, staff supervision, workflow management, financial review, process improvement, and cross\-functional support. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Manage day\-to\-day accounting operations, including general ledger activity, journal entries, cash receipts, balance sheet reconciliations, invoice and expense coding, accounts payable, and other assigned accounting work. Ensure assigned accounting activities are completed on time, accurately, and in accordance with Finance policies, procedures, and applicable accounting standards. Manage month\-end, quarter\-end, and year\-end close activities for assigned areas, including close schedules, account reconciliations, deadline tracking, and issue resolution. Prepare and/or review account analyses, reconciliations, budget vs. actual support schedules, and other financial schedules, including support for monthly financial statement preparation and internal reporting needs. Review accounting activity and supporting schedules to identify variances, unusual activity, coding issues, accrual needs, or other matters requiring correction, follow\-up, or escalation. Oversee grant, contract, and program accounting support, including preparation and review of cost allocations, invoices, expenditure coding, supporting schedules, for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with applicable funding requirements. Support external audit, tax, United Way Worldwide, and other reporting requirements by preparing and/or reviewing supporting documentation and transaction research. Supervise, train, and support assigned Finance team members, including workflow oversight, task prioritization, review of work, coaching, accountability, and cross\-training. Develop, update, and maintain accounting procedures, desk procedures, related SOPs, accounting files, schedules, and supporting documentation. Recommend and implement accounting process and system improvements that increase accuracy, efficiency, documentation, internal control, and continuity. Support the Director of Accounting in maintaining strong accounting practices, internal controls, segregation of duties, and financial data integrity. Provide flexible Finance team coverage during peak periods, extended absences, or staffing gaps, including support for accounting operations, donor transaction activity, and other critical and time\-sensitive Finance priorities. Qualifications Education \& Experience Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or any combination of education and relevant experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties of this position. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting required. Minimum of 2 years supervisory and staff review experience required. Work experience inclusive of general ledger accounting, journal entry preparation and review, account reconciliations, financial schedules, and month\-end close required. Experience reviewing accounting work for accuracy, completeness, appropriate coding, supporting documentation, and compliance with policies and procedures required. Experience working in or with accounting systems required. Professional experience within the nonprofit sector in an accounting, finance, or audit capacity highly desired. Skills \& Knowledge Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite. Strong working knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger procedures, account reconciliations, journal entries, close processes, and financial data integrity. Ability to manage accounting workflows, track recurring deadlines, and ensure accurate and timely completion of assigned Finance deliverables. Ability to review accounting work for accuracy, completeness, appropriate coding, supporting documentation, and compliance with Finance policies and procedures. Ability to research transactions, identify discrepancies, resolve accounting issues, and escalate complex matters appropriately. Ability to prepare and review financial schedules, account analyses, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for internal and external reporting needs. Ability to supervise, train, guide, and support team members while promoting accountability, accuracy, and cross\-training. Collaborative, solutions\-oriented, and comfortable working across departments and with Finance leadership. Flexible and responsive to shifting priorities, deadlines, and team needs. Employment Requirements Must be authorized to work in the United States. Must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Must reside on Oahu. Working Conditions Work Environment Hybrid work model after first 3 months of onboarding. Work Hours Full\-time, Monday through Friday. Occasional early morning, evening, or weekend hours may be required during peak finance cycles, such as month\-end close/reporting, annual close, external audit engagements, and active campaign periods. Equipment Use Regular use of a computer and related office technology, including Microsoft Office, CRM, accounting systems, and virtual meeting platforms. Mental and Physical Requirements Must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without reasonable accommodation. Fast\-paced role requiring accounting review, staff supervision, workflow management, prioritization, and communication with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness. Ability to sit for extended periods on a computer. Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 15 pounds (ex: filing boxes). Communication Requirements Frequent verbal and written communication with internal teams, Finance leadership, auditors, vendors, and other internal or external stakeholders. Supervisory Requirements Supervises assigned Finance team members and provides day\-to\-day workflow oversight, review, training, coaching, and guidance.
