Our Impact:

Each year, Legal Aid of Marin (LAM) provides thousands of Marin residents with direct civil legal services, education, and resources. Our priorities include: recovering wages for immigrant workers; advocating on behalf of tenants and enforcing renter protections; providing legal services aimed at homelessness prevention and housing preservation; restoring driver’s licenses and alleviating poverty through the Marin Community Court program; increasing access to pro bono legal services in partnership with the private bar; and connecting Marin residents to local community\-based organizations providing access to social services. Our Staff works collaboratively to bring services to the communities we serve by engaging in regular outreach in partnership with community\-based organizations across Marin. We practice client\-centered and trauma\-informed lawyering, working passionately to increase Marin County residents’ access to the civil justice system. We are determined to make Marin a more equitable place for everyone.

Position Overview:

This position will support LAM’s legal services by assisting LAM’s housing attorneys in providing housing legal services to LAM's clients. The legal assistant will also conduct regular off\-site outreach in places where LAM’s clients live, work, and gather.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with attorneys on case development, client communications, hearing preparation, drafting legal documents, and court filings;
  • Conduct client intakes at LAM’s San Rafael office, by telephone, and at off\-site outreach locations;
  • Work effectively with clients and LAM attorneys to provide client\-centered legal services to LAM’s clients;
  • Maintain complete and accurate client files in case management database and other systems;
  • Address client needs holistically through effective referrals;
  • Provide interpretation between Spanish and English;
  • Provide administrative support, such as creation and maintenance of informational flyers, client files, and data entry;
  • Assist with planning presentations, workshops, and community outreach;
  • Collaborate with community partners to facilitate clients’ access to services and resources;
  • Support thorough data collection practices to meet program goals and report program outcomes in a timely manner;
  • Maintain complete and accurate client data for tracking and reporting; and
  • Other mission\-aligned duties as assigned by organizational leadership, including, but not limited to, additional outreach activities, supporting other LAM legal services units, and undergoing cross\-training to support all legal services teams.
  • Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to LAM’s mission and serving marginalized \& underserved Marin communities.
  • Fully bilingual in English and Spanish, both spoken and written;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to build consensus and contribute to collaborative environment;
  • Ability to work in a fast\-paced environment with quickly shifting priorities and deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respectfully communicate and collaborate with clients, attorneys, coworkers, and community partners;
  • Willingness to accept feedback and address areas for professional growth;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to accurately perform detailed work;
  • Ability to multi\-task, be proactive, demonstrate flexibility, and work independently;
  • Willingness to take on additional mission\-aligned tasks when assigned by organizational leadership;
  • Excellent computer skills, including data entry and Microsoft Office;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance; and
  • Ability to travel to offices of community parters regularly for outreach events as scheduled by LAM.
  • On\-site Requirement:

    This position will require three days per week of on\-site work in San Rafael, California. This position may be authorized for remote work for up to two days per week after an initial training period, however, candidates must be flexible to increased on\-site work when required by their supervisor and to meet organizational goals. Remote work is not a guaranteed benefit and may be adjusted or revoked at any time.

    Compensation:

    Pay is $31 per hour (40\-hour work week). This is a non\-exempt and full\-time position. Overtime hours are permitted, but only at the discretion of LAM’s Executive Director. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan participation, and employer contribution to retirement after six months of employment.
