The 4\-H Program Assistant is a part\-time (25 hours per week) position within the Cooperative Extension 4\-H Youth Development program, serving Carroll County. Working under the supervision of the 4\-H Program Manager, this role supports the department’s mission to provide high\-quality, research\-based youth programming by planning and delivering hands\-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) educational experiences. The position is integrated into the broader 4\-H program structure, collaborating with staff, volunteers, and community partners to expand access to STEM learning opportunities for youth in both club and public settings.

Core responsibilities include implementing established STEM Pathway curricula, facilitating engaging and developmentally appropriate programs, and building partnerships with local community organizations to broaden program reach. The Program Assistant will receive training in STEM curriculum delivery and will have opportunities to contribute to the development of new programs and activities. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and facilitation skills, as well as the ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with program goals. While the position carries meaningful responsibility in program delivery and community engagement, it is not designated as essential staff

Duties/Responsibilities

Program Planning \& Delivery – 40%

  • Coordinate and deliver engaging 4\-H STEM Pathway programs for youth ages 5–18 in club and public settings.
  • Facilitate hands\-on, inquiry\-based learning experiences aligned with 4\-H Positive Youth Development principles.
  • Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of diverse audiences and varying program environments.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  • Partnership Development \& Community Engagement – 20%

  • Collaborate with local libraries, recreation departments, and community organizations to expand access to STEM programming.
  • Support outreach efforts to increase participation in 4\-H programs across Carroll County.
  • Curriculum Implementation \& Development – 20%

  • Deliver established STEM Pathway curricula with fidelity following provided training.
  • Assist in adapting and developing new STEM activities and program offerings based on community needs and emerging trends.
  • Incorporate experiential learning, reflection, and youth voice into program design.
  • Program Administration \& Evaluation – 15%

  • Maintain accurate program records, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Support basic program evaluation efforts, including collecting feedback and reporting outcomes.
  • Assist with program logistics, including scheduling, supply management, and communication with participants and families.
  • Professional Development \& Team Collaboration – 5%

  • Participate in required trainings and ongoing professional development related to 4\-H, STEM education, and youth development.
  • Collaborate with the 4\-H Program Manager, staff, and volunteers to ensure program quality and consistency.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment and support overall program goals.
  • Requirements

    Minimum Acceptable Education \& Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Knowledge, Skills \& Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of youth development principles, preferably within a 4\-H or positive youth development framework.
  • Familiarity with STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, and math) and interest in hands\-on, experiential learning.
  • General awareness of educational practices for youth ages 7 to 12, including age\-appropriate program design.
  • Understanding of community\-based programming and the role of partnerships in expanding access.
  • Strong facilitation and teaching skills, with the ability to engage youth in interactive, inquiry\-based learning.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for working with youth, families, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Organizational and time management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple programs.
  • Basic administrative skills, including record keeping, data entry, and program documentation.
  • Ability to use standard technology tools (e.g., email, spreadsheets, virtual meeting platforms) to support program delivery and communication.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively under the supervision of the 4\-H Program Manager.
  • Ability to adapt curriculum and teaching approaches to meet diverse learning styles and environments.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with youth, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful program environment.
  • Ability to travel within Carroll County as needed for program delivery.
  • Ability to learn and implement new curriculum and program content with training and support.

Compensation Pay Range:

$20\.00 per hour
