FPDC is responsible for executing over 400 active projects ranging from $1,000 to multi\-billion\-dollar builds, implementing a $10 billion capital expansion program spanning clinical, research, hospitality, and infrastructure facilities. FPDC has over 200 professionals including project managers, planners, architects, designers, and operations experts, working as a team to complete all of these projects.

Facilities Planning, Design and Construction (FPDC) manages funds and projects designated by The University of Texas System for improvements to MD Anderson facilities. The professionals working in FPDC provide their clients with architectural and engineering services, space standards and planning, and interior specifications for their projects. FPDC also handles the creation of long\-term development plans for the institution and for specific divisions within MD Anderson. This includes strategic and long\-term capital plans, project programming and development, facility assessment and capital improvement, code and development standards and master planning.

The ideal candidate brings 5\+ years of true project management experience (assistant PM, project engineer, or similar roles will not qualify), with a strong emphasis on pre\-construction/design. A background in architecture is essential, along with hands\-on experience managing projects\-preferably in healthcare settings. Successful candidates will also have demonstrated people leadership experience, not just project leadership.

This is a people leadership role\-not a project management position. Ideal candidates should be genuinely interested in transitioning from managing projects to managing and developing people, with people leadership as the primary focus. Direct people management experience (beyond project or matrix leadership) is required, and a background in design is strongly preferred.

Hybrid schedule: Remotely, Monday \& Friday; In\-office Tuesday\-Thursday

Salary Range: $146,500 \- $193,000 \- $219,500

    SUMMARY

    The primary purpose of the Principal Project Manager position is to lead and direct project management staff in the implementation of capital and Facilities improvement projects with a total project cost less than $10 million. The individual will provide project management expertise and leadership in the planning, organizing and implementing of facilities projects through the direct supervision and management of project management staff. This position manages and monitors the day\-to\-day staff performance, their project progress, the development of project products using standardized processes and provides guidance to assure compliance and adherence to current institutional and industry standards. Principal project manager is also responsible for hiring employees, performing employee evaluations and where applicable, written coaching/counseling and employee notices.

    JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

    Personnel Management Supervise assigned personnel in the production of the business unit's products and services. Makes hiring recommendations for staff positions. Conducts performance evaluations and handles personnel issues. Establishes goals, determines resource requirements and allocates available resources to meet those goals. Creates and implements changes as needed to meet departmental, divisional or institutional goals in conjunction with the director of capital projects.

    Support the development and implementation of project management staff training and mentoring that guides the staff in performing their job through their use of standardized products and processes.

    Project Management Guide and monitor the assigned project management staff to ensure they are adhering to the established operating procedures. Ensure that projects are completed on schedule, within budget and in accordance with applicable quality standards.

    Effectively manage the resources and staff in a manner that yields productive actions through managing workloads, conflicts, providing guidance to overcome barriers and validating efforts.

    Contractual Documentation/Recordkeeping Plans, defines, organizes, coordinates and directs contractual relationships for the assigned projects. Defines and implements contractual and financial strategies that optimize the resources of the Institution. Establishes \& directs contracting strategies and negotiations for the Institution through subordinate managers, professionals and other staff. Coordinate the approval procedures with the Facilities Executive Steering Committee and associated State Agencies. Enforces contract terms and conditions with the vendors.

    EDUCATION

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Science or related field.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Seven years project/construction management related activities, including project management, budgeting and documentation.
  • Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Preferred: Five years Construction and design experience working with or in an academic medical setting.
