Responsible for application and removal of casts, molds, splints and scoliosis plaster jackets; and the adjustment of external fixators, on the order of and under the direction of an orthopedic surgeon or other physician.

Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager and /or Registered Nurse (RN), performs a variety of administrative, clinical, departmental support, and documentation duties to promote the health, safety, and comfort of CT Children’s patients and families. Supports organizational and departmental quality and patient satisfaction initiatives; hand hygiene, communication skills, translation services, and Patient and Family Experience.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT\-10%

  • Scheduling and coordinating patient appointments.
  • Answering and directing calls.
  • Prepare and files medical record.
  • Maintains clinical files according to organization/department protocol.
  • Processes patient related correspondence.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • CLINICAL SUPPORT\-75%

  • Prepares cast bays and equipment for patient casting as well as cleaning cast bays between each patient. Cleans and stocks patient care rooms/equipment between patients.
  • Applies corrective casts under the supervision of an orthopaedic physician.
  • Provides assistance for all work done in the plaster room.
  • Performs duties in accordance with established methods and technologies and in conformance with recognized standards under the direction of the orthopaedic CNS and attending physician.
  • Performs adjustments of fixators, sets up traction, observes and reports skin condition and other plaster room related duties.
  • Removes and applies holding casts under the direction of the orthopaedic physician.
  • Provides DME bracing and other DME applications and instructions for use, including crutches and crutch training.
  • Ensures efficient patient flow.
  • Prepares treatment rooms and equipment for patient examinations.
  • Provides appropriate procedural support following department specific guidelines.
  • Performs initial intake of patient, up to and including: Interviews patient and family to obtain chief complaint/reason for visit, vital signs, and allergy information.
  • Accurately records and/or updates relevant patient information. Such as but not limited to; lists medications, and medical history.
  • Performs daily Quality Controls (QC) for all Point of Care (POC) testing.
  • Obtain specimens, accurately performs and records patient POC testing per policy.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, performs tracking and retrieval of patient lab/diagnostic testing results to facilitate timely provider review and follow\-up.
  • Under provider and/or RN direction, performs the administrative functions of the patient prescription
  • renewal process in accordance to policy.

    DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT\-5%

  • Maintains appropriate inventories of casting and medical supplies, ordering additional supplies when par levels require in accordance with budget allotments, and expense tracking.
  • Monitors the patient casting schedule for accuracy and optimization of patient flow.
  • Must maintain DME supplies, paperwork, and application for department location
  • Stocks and maintains all patient related forms and educational materials.
  • Utilizes equipment appropriately and notifies Practice Manager/Lead Cast Tech in a timely fashion of equipment/facility break\-down or damage.
  • Attends and supports departmental staff meetings
  • DOCUMENTATION\-5%

  • Documentation is legible and falls within the appropriate MA scope/Organizational documentation
  • guidelines.

  • Accurately documents patient information in appropriate EMR/forms. Demonstrates accuracy in basic data entry and data retrieval of paper/electronic patient records.
  • OTHER RELATED ACTIVITES\-5%

  • Assumes responsibility for patient scheduling, charging and statistical summaries, maintains equipment and environment to assure infection control and safety.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned to promote the health, safety and comfort of CT Children's patients and families.
  • Ability to travel to satellite locations may be required.

  • Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Education:
  • + High School Diploma, GED, or a higher level of education that would require the completion of high school, is required.

    + Completion of competency of basic cast application and removal.

  • Experience:
  • + One year experience in hospital or orthopedic physicians' office, including plaster room required.

    Education and/or Experience Preferred:

  • Education: Education as Orthopedic Technologist and Medical Assistant preferred.
  • License and/or Certification Required:

  • BLS/CPR for Healthcare Providers from Heart American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 1 month of hire and maintained thereafter.

  • Maintain all required POCT Validation training.
  • License and/or Certification Preferred:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) granted by the American Association of Medical Assistants or Registered Medical Assistant granted by the American Medical Technologists.
  • Registered Orthopedic Technician certification granted by the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology and basic math and measurements
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Skills:

  • Basic literacy and proficiency in computers, Microsoft Office applications, Practice Management System(s), and Electronic Health Record Systems (E.H.R.).
  • Excellent interpersonal, phone, customer service, problem\-solving, and communication skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication in English, demonstrating a command of basic grammar and spelling.
  • Abilities:

  • Understand and follow specific written and verbal instructions and procedures.
  • Learn and demonstrate competency in standard clinical procedures within specialty area, according to established protocols.
  • Maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Learn and follow established protocols in order to initiate appropriate action in emergency/crisis situations.
  • Learn and demonstrate competency in basic data entry/data retrieval in paper/electronic patient records.
  • Effectively work in a team environment as well as collaboratively with all disciplines.
