  • The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of Community Access, Bureau of Child Support Services is seeking an Administrative Assistant 1 to join our team!

    At Child Support Services, we help the families of Iowa successfully navigate and understand the importance of providing both financial and emotional support for their children by building relationships with the parents to ensure they are successful.     Work Location and Requirements:

    We are hiring two candidates to fill positions located in the Des Moines CSS office. These are full\-time opportunities, Monday – Friday with hours from 8:00 AM \- 4:30 PM. A hybrid work schedule may be an option upon successful completion of the training period and with management approval. This position does require a driver’s license and the ability to travel on occasion, as needed. These are not remote positions.

    Job Duties:

  • Advanced processing and paraprofessional case management as a member of an office team for parents in need of paternity, medical and support establishment, modification of existing order, enforcement, and monitoring of support orders.
  • Communicate with a variety of community partners including human service agencies, employers, clerks of court, county sheriffs, attorneys, and other entities to achieve the goals of the Child Support Program through phone calls, emails, and other written correspondence.
  • Independently analyzes a variety of complex case situations and legal scenarios to determine the appropriate action to assist in the implementation of local program goals and objectives for achieving statewide success for the Child Support Program.
  • Assist supervisors by performing duties to aid distribution and balance of the workload.
  • Using Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook) proficiently and has the aptitude to learn about other computerized systems, including ICAR, is critically important for success in this position.
  • Comprehend and adhere to confidentiality provisions in the Code of Iowa
  • The ideal candidate will have strong experience with:

  • Critical thinking skills and executing complex tasks independently.
  • Customer service, including de\-escalation of conflictual or adversarial situations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and report composition.
  • Teamwork, collaboration, and consultation.
  • Managing multiple deadlines.
  • Extreme accuracy in mathematical calculations and timelines.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four\-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in any field.
  • A total of four years of education (as described in number one) and/or full\-time experience in accounting, secretarial, or office support work collecting, compiling, reporting, examining and/or editing numerical data; coding and qualifying people for benefits, licenses, or other transactions; preparing and keeping budgetary accounts and projections; organizing and implementing office support operations; advising on procedural processes; or other work that provided direct support and exposure to substantive agency programs, where one year of full\-time experience is equal to 30 semester hours of education.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 12 months of full\-time work as a Secretary 2, Clerk Specialist, Public Service Supervisor, Accounting Technician (any level), Purchasing Assistant, or Human Resources Technical Assistant
