Position Overview: Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment per OSHA standards. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Professional manner and appearance. Ability to maintain confidentiality as required. Knowledge of medical record charting procedures. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, physicians, mid\-level providers, staff and miscellaneous general public (i.e. pharmacies, hospital, nursing homes, etc.). Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Minimal lifting requirements. Skill in telephone management/triaging. Knowledge of computer systems (e\-fax, email, EMR, etc.).
Major Duties/Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Patient Care:
Responds to patient telephone calls, assessing needs, and coordinating needs with providers. Accomplishing appropriate triage as well as returning calls promptly when unable to take calls directly. Pertinent or treatment documentation is charted appropriately in the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Assists providers in maintaining information logs/follow up with x\-rays, laboratory work, test results, etc., and relaying information to the patient per the providers’ orders helping to assure that nothing is missed and patients are notified with minimal or no concerns. Administers any/all injections per office protocol noting active provider’s orders as well as generating charges in a timely fashion to assure maximum reimbursement. Respects the five rights of medication administration\-right patient, right time, right medication, right dose, and right route.
Maintains appropriate charting of patient assessment or intervention in the EMR to include all information (i.e. illness, injury, accident\-auto or work comp). Completes calls or refill requests from pharmacies and patients regarding prescription refills, determining the need for provider approval or automatic renewal by nurse or those which require the patient to be seen in office. Initiates proper notification to patient (i.e. phone call, letter) and documents actions in the chart or refills in the EMR.
Fills out laboratory forms and x\-ray documentation for labs and x\-rays assuring completed information including ICD\-10 diagnosis code and ABN for routine or non\-covered services with minimal or no concerns. Attends meetings with pharmaceutical representatives or providers for educational purposes as requested. Responds to the specific needs of the provider and conforms to each provider’s individual practice style as well as maintaining uniformity throughout the clinic. Follows venipuncture protocols per infection control guidelines under provider direction, packaging properly for transport to correct lab with completed orders and requisitions. Double checks and assures that all labs/blood \& Cultures have been taken care of by the close of each business day with no concerns.
Complete knowledge of all laboratory tests as well as ability to perform accurately the authorized waived tests, i.e. glucometer, hemacue, dip stick UA, UCG, rapid strep, influenza and hemoccult readings, etc. Participation in periodic reviews and training to assure accuracy and compliance with protocols.
Inventory/Supplies/Exam Rooms:
Helps maintain inventory of instruments, drugs, serums and medical supplies, etc. and notifying clinic director of ordering concerns to assure continued stock and supply. Assists in continued monitoring of medical instruments/equipment repair, completes training and updates as required by protocols.
Administrative:
Helps assure adequate coverage is in place and/or temporary nursing help has been obtained prior to vacations/time off. Gives consideration to time off requests coordinating with physician’s schedules whenever possible. Addresses any concerns with Clinic Director. Employs quality control/assurance standards to provide the highest quality of care to Phillips County Medical Clinic patients. Helps maintain accounting for non\-reimbursable injections per rural health clinic regulations as well as following rural health clinic protocols regarding laboratory and encounter policies as directed by Clinic Director. Participates in Quality Improvement Activities and Initiatives as requested by Clinic Director. Keeps abreast of OSHA rules and regulations, hazardous waste disposal, sharps containers as required by law, aware of any changes/concerns and addressing any issues with Nursing Supervisor to assure all staff compliance. Accurately maintains specimen containers for drug screens as well as communication between companies in reporting of results/scheduling/transporting, etc. Attends training in\-services as required to meet compliance regulations.
Miscellaneous:
Attends and is active in staff/nursing meetings as well as any in\-services as requested by CNO, Clinic Director or Providers. Assists front desk answering phone calls and scheduling appointments when time permits. Participates in professional development activities, pharmaceutical luncheons as well as continuing medical education credits using the PCH education schedules, if possible, for licensing requirements as approved by nursing schedule and Clinic Director.
Job Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience\-preferably in a clinic setting.
Required Education: Graduate of accredited school of nursing and current Kansas Licensure. Must continue CME credits in order to maintain current licensure.
Required Certifications/Registrations: Current BLS Certification.
Physical Requirements:
Heavy workload: exerting 50\-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25\-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10\-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
Daily lifts, positions/transfer patients, with assistance of the mechanical lift up to and the excess of 200 lbs.
