Summary
We are searching for a Director of Accounting to provide leadership and oversight of the accounting and finance function of our company during a pivotal period of growth. Our team is comprised of experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, and nutritionists specializing in primary care and sports medicine. Our organization is comprised of 180\+ employees across 5 locations in San Diego. This role will be responsible for a variety of financial, accounting, and administrative matters related to the operation of the company. This role requires supervision and participation; the Director of Accounting must be able to oversee and execute the duties described below. A key priority will be strengthening our close and reporting processes and helping lead our transition from cash\-basis reporting to accurate, timely accrual\-basis financials. The Director of Accounting will bring physician practice/healthcare accounting experience, including an understanding of healthcare revenue cycle operations and revenue recognition. This individual will be responsible for providing complete, accurate, and timely financial reporting on a monthly basis for both internal use and to comply with external reporting requirements. The individual will have access to highly sensitive and confidential information; discretion is of the utmost importance. This role will partner closely with Senior Leadership and will report to the CFO.
Job Functions
- Oversee and continuously improve the month\-end close process to ensure timely, accurate reporting that meets internal and external requirements.
- Develop, document, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls appropriate for a scaled multi\-site physician practice environment.
- Lead the design and implementation of accrual accounting processes, including the roadmap and monthly routines required to transition reporting from cash basis to accrual basis.
- Identify opportunities to standardize, professionalize, and automate accounting processes (A/R, A/P, payroll, close, and reporting), including evaluating and implementing tools and workflows that scale with growth and integrate with healthcare billing/revenue cycle systems.
- Partner with revenue cycle, billing, and operations leaders to ensure appropriate revenue recognition and accurate reporting of patient service revenue, contractual allowances, write\-offs, refunds, and other revenue cycle\-related balances.
- Ensure timely completion of monthly account reconciliations, including bank accounts, investment accounts, capital accounts, and other sub\-ledger/general ledger reconciliations.
- Act as a liaison between the needs of leadership and the accounting team.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of expense allocations, recurring accruals, and adjusting/reclassifying journal entries to support accurate accrual\-basis financial statements.
- Oversee compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, including correspondence with outside CPA firm.
- Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for presentation to leadership for review and approval.
- Assure accuracy and completeness of financial statements and management reporting for internal and external stakeholders. Develop and oversee key dashboards and metrics (e.g., close timeliness, cash, A/R, collections, and profitability) as requested.
- Manage Accounting Team (A/P, A/R, Staff Accountants, etc.) on daily activities, trainings, and professional development.
- Assist with the preparation and ongoing monitoring of the organizational budget and implement procedures to track and explain variances.
- At the direction of leadership, build pro\-forma financials to help assist new clinic or service line growth.
- Additional duties as necessary.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
- CPA license required
- 7\+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in healthcare/physician practice accounting
- Proficient in MS Office, especially MS Excel
- Strong understanding of accrual accounting (preferably including experience supporting or leading a cash\-to\-accrual conversion) and revenue recognition concepts in a healthcare setting
- Experience with healthcare EMR/EHR (e.g., Epic or similar) and comfort working with revenue cycle data
- 7\-10 years of experience with monthly close, financial statement preparation, review, and analysis; prior people management experience strongly preferred

Work Environment
This position is in\-person in San Diego, California. The job does occasionally require traveling to attend meetings, as requested by leadership of the company. Individual must be able to work 8:00am to 5:00pm Pacific time. Work cannot be performed from outside of the United States.
This job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.

Salary Range:
$125,000 \- $150,000 annually.
