Job Summary --------------- The SICU is a 20 bed adult high acuity Intensive Care Unit. Patients are admitted from over 20 surgical and medical services. SICU is home to Adult Liver Transplant post\-op patients and is a regional referral center for Adult ARDS/ECMO therapy. SICU is additionally home to UMHS Adult Rapid Response/Arrest Team. The Clinical Nurse Supervisor will partner with the Clinical Nursing Director and the Clinical Nurse Specialist in the planning and management of the clinical and administrative operation of the Adult Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the University Hospital Adult Rapid Response Nursing Team (RRT). To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research. To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements. Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Functional and administrative supervision of the nursing and support staff personnel as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Provide direct clinical nursing care to the SICU patient population and patients throughout the health system via the RRT/Arrest team. Responsibilities\ ---------------------- Personnel Management: Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff. Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff. Participate in counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff. Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans. Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director. Clinical Practice: Provide bedside care to SICU patient population as determined by staffing needs and the Clinical Nursing Director. Respond to RRT calls as needed. Provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff. Management of Clinical Area: Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care. Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Clinical Nursing Director, Educational Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist to implement competency based educational programming and evaluation. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns. Quality Assurance and Research: Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable. Required Qualifications\ ----------------------------- Required Educational Requirements: Applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Minimum five (5\) years RN experience. Minimum two (2\) years recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in a critical care setting. Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2\) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE\-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, advancement in professional development framework, or other management/leadership experience. Work Schedule ----------------- Hours/Week: 40 hours Shift: Evening, Night shifts, and weekends will be required based on the needs of the unit. Some staffing may be required per unit needs and Clinical Nursing Director request.
