About the Role The Human Resources Generalist position reports to the Human Resources Director and serves as a key business partner providing Executive Assistant, Office Manager, and Human Resources support across the organization. The role acts as a liaison for a broad range of administrative and HR functions, including benefits, compensation, and HRIS administration (with support from HR staff), while supporting company initiatives related to recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, performance management, and other HR programs. In addition, this position is responsible for executive\-level administrative support, office operations, facilities coordination, event planning, communications, and day\-to\-day office management activities that help ensure an efficient and professional work environment. The role collaborates closely with leadership, management teams, and employees across Matson Logistics, Matson Logistics Warehousing, and, where applicable, Span Alaska, to ensure company objectives, best practices, values, and culture are consistently supported and maintained. This is an onsite role in Walnut Creek, CA. What you’ll do: Acts as HR representative, to facilitate fair, firm, and consistent implementation of all legal, company and local policies, programs, standards and practices, including Matson Values. Ensures effective communications for positive employee relations. Works with Managers and with corporate HR, to identify changes to HR related policies, as dictated by the business needs. Capable of handling full cycle recruitment from sourcing to screening to closing. Coordinates the background investigation for all new hires and drug screening for all MLW hiring candidates, and drug/alcohol screening for incident\-related, reasonable cause, and random testing. Counsels employees and managers on work related matters. Counsels and coaches managers and supervisors with employee relations issues; works in partnership with the management team in all disciplinary actions (including conducting and documenting investigations). Acts as primary liaison with Temp service providers; coordinates Temp staffing levels and Temp cost management in partnership with the Management team. Implements and administers compensation and benefits programs and procedures. Calendar management, planning, and scheduling meetings for executive team as necessary. Travels as necessary to various locations to communicate directly with employees. Complies with all company rules, policies, and procedures. Works and behaves safely by following all safety rules and regulations. Performs any task required to support customer requirements and company goals. Effectively manages sensitive and confidential employee matters with professionalism, fairness, and discretion. Provides guidance and support in resolving workplace concerns and conflict. Communication Skills Communicates effectively in both written and verbal formats with employees at all organizational levels. Delivers information clearly, professionally, and with appropriate discretion. Facilitates positive employee and leadership interactions. Relationship Building \& Collaboration Develops strong partnerships with managers, employees, and cross\-functional stakeholders. Works collaboratively to achieve business objectives while maintaining positive employee relations. Demonstrates a customer\-service mindset when supporting internal clients. Exercises sound judgment in balancing employee needs, business objectives, and legal requirements. Escalates matters appropriately when necessary. Uses metrics and data to support decision\-making and continuous improvement initiatives Change Management Supports organizational change initiatives by communicating effectively, building engagement, and driving adoption. Helps leaders and employees navigate change while maintaining productivity and morale. And these qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred, plus five years experience in Human Resources. Proven track record in administering employee relations, general employment practices, and compliance issues, recruiting, and hiring, benefits administration, policy implementation, and handling of confidential information. Firm understanding of employment and labor laws and regulations. Adaptable to changes in a demanding work environment; manages multiple priorities; changes approach or method to best fit the situation; able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, flexibility in personal style, and ability to communicate effectively with all groups and individuals, frequently dealing with sensitive, difficult, or confrontational issues. General working knowledge of human resources, management skills, problem solving, conflict resolution, consulting skills, decision making skills. Ability to balance the corporate HR strategy with the needs of the business. Solid knowledge of business practices and procedures; strong analytical skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Demonstrated team player: gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to building a positive team spirit; able to contribute to positive morale and help focus on group commitments to goals and objectives; supports everyone’s efforts to succeed. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft computer software (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and ability to perform computer activities on a regular basis (keystroking, data entry, email, etc.) Other requirements such as travel Travel as required to various offices/facilities. The annual salary range is posted for this position in California. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
