  • Under general supervision from the JTR RN Manager within the JTR Crisis Stabilization Unit (Acute Psych) and Recovery Management (Detox) programs, provides oversight of Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) services to SRPMIC Community Members and/or patients across the continuum of care in JTR. With the goals of promoting recovery and restoring health, preventing disease and disability as well as improving the quality of life through safe therapeutic milieu management, psychiatric de\-escalation, crisis intervention, and detox/withdrawal support. This job class is treated as Non\-Exempt.

  • * Workflow and supervision:Oversees a team of 8 BHTs, programming, staff coverage and other identified supervisor functions to include:

    + Provides full technical and administrative supervision of BHT staff.

    + Prepares shift schedules, and coordinates time off for BHT staff.

    + Monitors attendance and timecards.

    + Maintains BHT operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational and personnel policies and procedures.

    + Outlines goals and objectives for evaluation, evaluates performance of BHT staff and conducts timely performance evaluations.

    + Provides training and leadership for the BHTs to accomplish the community's health goals and standards of care including de\-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, detox monitoring, documentation, and certification requirements.

    + Ensures safe and clean working environment by coordinating with BHT staff following procedures and when necessary and orders supplies as needed for JTR operations.

    + Maintains adequate inventory and oversight of supplies utilized for patient care in the Crisis Stabilization and Detox units.

    + Monitors patient observation logs, safety checks, and behavioral health documentation for compliance and accuracy.

    + Provides daily working coverage of entire continuum needs with directive from RN Manager.

    + Coordinates ongoing patient care with nursing staff, JTR Providers and other specialty providers to enhance ongoing patient care and medical/behavioral needs.

    + Provides orientation and competency training to new BHT staff to establish competencies of care and best practices for JTR units and Recovery Needs.

    + Ongoing support and trainer for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI), de\-escalation techniques, First Aid, Assistance in Self\-Administration of Medication, Naloxone administration, and other behavioral health/medical trainings as identified.

    + Provides biweekly supervision to BHTs for continued development and quality oversight.

    + Remains calm under pressure, able to quickly and effectively delegate staff responsibilities during busy shifts or psychiatric emergencies.

    + Develops and maintains Infection Control Procedures/logs on all units of care in conjunction with RN Manager.

    * Departmental Management:Maintains Health \& Human Services department direction with community objectives on standards of care and operations.

    + Evaluates processes and procedures within scope of BHT function for quality standards of care, recommends changes to meet the organizational goals.

    + Maintains supplies inventory by studying usage reports; identifying trends; anticipating needed supplies; approving requisitions and cost allocations.

    + Operates within the departmental budget for operations (personnel and supplies).

    + Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient records.

    + Serves as a leader, mentor and role model to newly hired BHT Staff and others.

    + Maintains personnel files and documentation of training of staff.

    * Patient Interaction:Assist with BHT duties, including safety monitoring, de\-escalation, crisis intervention, therapeutic milieu management, and supporting daily living activities consistent with recovery and wellness.

    + Initiates preventative behavioral health measures within the scope of practice for a Behavioral Health Technician.

    + Observes, assesses and documents patient behavior, mood, and progress.

    + Assists in carrying out provider and nursing directed orders.

    + Applies appropriate de\-escalation and crisis intervention techniques according to health care priorities identified in assessments.

    + Monitors and cares for patients per provider orders and standards of care in acute psychiatric and detox settings.

    + Adheres to established policies, procedures, and standing orders.

    + Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing.

    + Models and assists other BHTs with Psychoeducation groups for wellness.

    * Patient Documentation, Care \& Treatment Plans:Documents patient observations and interactions, which includes behavioral data, interventions provided, evaluation of effectiveness and patient education.

    + Develops and documents behavioral support plans and interdisciplinary treatment plans.

    + Establishes and maintains documentation and communication flow at each program site.

    + Appraises quality and effectiveness of documentation and education materials and equipment as needed.

    + Recommends changes when necessary and follows through to ensure that agreed upon changes are implemented and maintained.

    + Participates as a member of multi\-disciplinary consultation and review teams including case assignments.

    + Attends staff meetings as requested.

    + Monitors patient status in detox (CIWA/COWS) and psychiatric settings, and determines need for escalation to nursing/provider.

    + Provides psychoeducation to clients.

    + Sets up and monitors patient safety and observation protocols.

    + Educates the BHT team in Assistance in Self\-Administration of Medication and updates per regulatory requirement(s).

    + Documents accurately, legibly and completely in Electronic Health Record (EHR), patient charts. Includes subjective and objective behavioral data, interventions provided, evaluation of effectiveness and patient education provided.

    * Coordination of Care:Oversees care coordination support for individuals and families including coordination of all health\-related appointments and activities.

    + Provides referrals for clients with social and emotional problems or any other needs, beyond the scope of the BHT, to other community agencies and services for assistance, and to the appropriate level of care as needed.

    + Collaborative part of transition/discharge planning for continued patient care.

    + Oversees all client transitions to other facilities, programs or homes.

    + Participates in case staffing as required.

    + Assists as needed with the coordination of all health\-related appointments and referrals.

    + Coordinates behavioral health aspect of patients if they transition to another facility, hospital, treatment center or other.

    + Develops and documents behavioral support plans and interdisciplinary treatment plans.

    + Establishes and maintains documentation and communication flow between staff at Salt River Clinic.

  • Updates professional knowledge and proficiency in behavioral health support through continuing education, staff meetings, training and conferences, etc.
  • Performs other job\-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operation.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history, customs, culture, traditions and government of the Salt River Pima\-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of medical, public health and social service resources available to Native Americans including, but not limited to, Indian Health Service (IHS), Medicare, Medicaid, ALTCS, SSI, etc.
  • Knowledge of assessment, diagnostic, preventative and therapeutic procedures used in a community behavioral health program.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and SRPMIC laws and regulations governing behavioral health technician practices.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles and scope of practice for a Behavioral Health Technician.
  • Knowledge of theory and practices of management in behavioral health services.
  • Knowledge of counseling theory and techniques as well as learning principles and strategies.
  • Knowledge of health systems and disease processes.
  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of public health practices and concerns.
  • Knowledge of Addiction Recovery principles of care and standards of practice to include: Withdrawal Management, Residential Care, Outpatient Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Knowledge of Assessment Protocol Standards; Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) and Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) and M.A.T. Medications (Suboxone, Buprenorphine, Naltrexone, Vivitrol) to enhance recovery process.
  • Strong knowledge of psychiatric symptoms, crisis stabilization, de\-escalation techniques, and acute behavioral health interventions.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Skill observing, assessing and documenting the behavior and progress of patients. Skill assessing client needs and developing behavioral support plans. Skill applying professional de\-escalation, crisis intervention and emergency response procedures including Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI), First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support. Skill with verbal and written communication and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, clients, families, community groups and health professionals. Skill managing various employee types in stressful situations. Skill with program planning, operational processes, and creating department budgets. Skill applying and interpreting federal, state, and agency laws and regulations governing behavioral health practices.

    Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, subordinates, supervisors, health care professionals, Tribal officials, representatives or resource agencies, patients and Community members. Ability to communicate any changes needed to treatment protocols per evidence\-based standards. Ability to work as a productive member of a team. Ability to deal with sensitive issues and maintain appropriate, professional and confidential relationships. Ability to incorporate cultural differences, health beliefs and learning styles. Ability to develop and implement program protocols as well as identify and address programmatic problems. Ability to use a personal computer and related software, including MS Office along with a variety of standard office equipment including cellular phones, photocopiers, FAX machines and calculators. Ability to bend, lift, and move in a manner consistent with the duties assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in Behavioral Health, Psychology, Social Work or related field preferred. AND Current Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire required.

    Experience: Three (3\) years professional behavioral health experience required, with at least one (1\) year in acute psychiatric/crisis stabilization or detox/withdrawal management settings strongly preferred. Supervisory or lead experience preferred. Experience working with Native American Communities preferred. Experience working in a behavioral health clinic or residential treatment setting preferred. Working knowledge of infection control, crisis de\-escalation, psychiatric safety protocols, and/or chronic disease management preferred.

    Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

    Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2\-19, Underfill.
