The Pinellas County Property Appraiser’s Office is seeking a mapping and GIS specialist. This entry level position has a salary starting at $52,249\.60 annually. This is the Property Appraiser’s Office (PAO) entry level work of routine technical difficulty in the area of cartography and mapping to collect and maintain property and cartographic data essential to the compilation of maps and databases used for property appraisal purposes. Work involves entering, editing, and correction of parcel (cadastral) data within the Geographic Information System (GIS), and the use of peripheral software and equipment as required. The incumbent will have limited access to the internal system operation and will be under complete supervision, working closely with senior mapping staff, who provide training and direction. The incumbent reports to a supervisor or designee.
What Would you Do?
- Reads and interprets simple lot/block and metes and bounds descriptions
- Researches deeds and legal descriptions to clarify data; notes discrepancies in various mapping data and recommends corrective action
- Conducts limited abstract searches and assists in the preparation of proper legal descriptions of the various parcels involved using information technology
- Performs the splits, combinations, additions, and deletions of parcels and effects changes to property ownership maps using an in\-house automated information system
- Uses ArcGIS software editing tools to perform map edits and maintain parcel and ownership data
- Furnishes basic information concerning property descriptions to citizen inquiries
- Checks records for possible errors and brings same to attention of supervisor
- Aids all property appraiser staff, the public, the private sector and various governmental agencies in reference to metes \& bounds property identification, metes \& bounds splits, lot \& block splits, property size/boundary research, and property title research as it relates to the accuracy of the tax roll
- Performs related work as assigned or required
- Associate degree or technical diploma in surveying, engineering, cartography, geography, or computer science or a related field and 2 years’ experience as described above; or
- Bachelor’s degree in surveying, engineering, cartography, geography, or computer science or a related field
- An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
- May be required to take a test
- Availability to be assigned a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations
- Experience with editing data with ESRI ArcGIS software
- Understanding of GIS industry concepts, methods and procedures in Cadastral mapping
- Title research and/or Survey experience and the ability to read and interpret legal descriptions on various legal documents including deeds, plats and surveys
- Experience using the Public Land Survey System as it relates to real property in Florida
- Excellent business/professional writing skills
- Punctual, dependable with a positive attitude
- Willingness to obtain the designation of Certified Cadastralist of Florida
- Experience using geometry and trigonometry

What Do you Have to Have?
4 years of experience in cadastral (parcel) mapping, or in supporting geographic information systems by producing graphics, mapping or related support; or
