    The Opportunity

    WSDOT Northwest Region is seeking an Assistant Project Engineer (WMS2\) for the Snohomish/King County Construction Office in Seattle, WA. Reporting to the Project Engineer, this position is responsible for assisting in the leadership, management, and delivery of assigned highway construction projects within the region’s Capital Improvement and Preservation Program. This role applies advanced engineering and management principles to support the planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution of complex construction contracts while ensuring compliance with agency standards and regulatory requirements. The Assistant Project Engineer also contributes to integrating projects into the surrounding environment, maintaining mobility for all users, and minimizing impacts to the traveling public through effective planning, coordination, and implementation of construction activities.

    What to Expect

    This position assists the Project Engineer to lead an office of 20\-25 professional and technical engineer FTEs. The highest classification managed is a Transportations Engineer 3\. Oversight of General Engineering Consultant (GEC) support staff may also be required.

    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Project Engineer will:

  • Strategically plan the budget, schedule, and workforce necessary to deliver the Capital Improvement and Preservation Program (CIPP).
  • Work in partnership with the public, media, elected officials, contractors, and outside agencies to plan, build, maintain, and operate an efficient transportation system.
  • Lead an office of professional and technical engineers, including interns, temporary employees, and engineering consultants, in the construction of multiple transportation improvement and preservation projects.
  • Coordinate with the Design procurement team on Request for Proposal (RFP) development, lead meetings with Design\-Builders, and contribute to proposal evaluations.
  • Manage assigned projects in accordance with WSDOT policy and procedures to achieve scope, schedule, budget, and documentation objectives.
  • Deliver projects in an environmentally responsible manner consistent with applicable laws.
  • Report on the status of assigned projects to WSDOT Regional and Statewide Executive management.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, external agencies, contractors, and the public to resolve conflicts and maintain project progress.
  • Certify, using a Professional Engineer’s stamp, that all WSDOT standards and policies were followed in construction change orders.
  • Qualifications

    To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:* Complex Project Delivery: Proven competency in managing and delivering complex civil or structural engineering projects,including coordinating multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, resolving technical issues, andensuring compliance with engineering standards.

    * Leadership, Management, and Regulatory Knowledge: Strong ability to lead and collaborate across teams, supported by comprehensive knowledge ofengineering principles, environmental regulations, and agency policies. Skilled in communicatingtechnical information, coordinating with internal and external partners, and making informed decisionsthat align with regulatory requirements.

    * Transportation Design and Construction Expertise: Extensive experience applying engineering concepts to both transportation design and/ or construction,including the ability to interpret plans, evaluate constructability, identify risks, and implement solutionsthat improve project outcomes.

    * Collaborative Problem\-Solving: Demonstrated ability to partner with diverse stakeholders to analyze, negotiate, and implement majordesign or construction changes, balancing technical requirements, project goals, and field conditions.

    * Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.

    * Service\-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.

    In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • Washington state Professional Engineering licensure, or the ability to obtain licensure in Washington State within one (1\) year of employment, demonstrating the ability to apply advanced engineering principles and judgement in engineering projects.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state\-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to travel within the region to safely perform site visits and inspections in dynamic field environments, including navigatinguneven terrain, working near active traffic, and operating in all weather conditions to assess projectprogress and identify engineering or safety concerns.
  • It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:* Educational Foundation: Demonstrated foundational knowledge of engineering principles and practices related to transportation or civil infrastructure projects, gained through experience and/or formal education.

    * Project Delivery Experience: Extensive experience in delivering design and/ or construction projects. WSDOT experience in project development, project delivery, and procuring projects through the design build or design\-bid\-build processes.

    * Federal Compliance Knowledge: Knowledge of FHWA processes and requirements related to delivering federally funded projects and ensure WSDOT meets federal stewardship obligations.

    * Supervisory Experience: Demonstrated ability effectively supervising and leading teams or personnel in a professional setting.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union\-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
