Overview:
FWI is building a team to support the U.S. Department of Labor in advancing AI skills development through Registered Apprenticeship programs by expanding AI literacy across all industries, growing RA programs in AI\-centric occupations, and strengthening the workforce pipeline for AI infrastructure. As the Senior Registered Apprenticeship SME, you will serve as the go\-to technical expert helping employers and industry partners understand how AI is changing their workforce — and then build the apprenticeship programs, training standards, and career pathways to keep American workers ahead of the curve.
This role is grounded in Registered Apprenticeship expertise. The ideal candidate brings deep RA system knowledge and the ability to apply it to emerging AI workforce needs. Candidates with strong RA backgrounds and a demonstrated willingness to develop AI domain knowledge are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assistance to employers, RA sponsors, industry associations, and DOL\-funded intermediaries on integrating AI into apprenticeship programs
- Develop AI\-related training modules, curricula, RTI outlines, and work process schedules that sponsors can adopt across industries
- Work with employers to develop 20\+ new AI\-centric apprenticeable occupations (think: AI Data Annotator, Prompt Engineer, AI Solutions Specialist)
- Review and vet at least 25 new occupation requests using the Apprenticeship Occupation Request (AOR) tool
- Build a framework to increase AI literacy across all RA programs, aligned with DOL's AI Literacy Framework
- Identify AI infrastructure occupations (electricians, telecom techs, network admins supporting data centers) and help sponsors incorporate AI into their programs
- Contribute to 5 published reports/papers on topics like AI's industry impact, cost\-benefit of AI in RA, and ethical AI guidelines
- Help plan and lead a national convening with AI experts, industry leaders, training providers, and federal/state agencies
- Engage with the Department of Education, NSF, and Department of Commerce on AI workforce skills alignment
- Partner with education systems to build pre\-apprenticeship and early career pathways into AI\-centric RA programs
- Bachelor's degree \+ 8 years of relevant experience, or 10\+ years of relevant experience without a degree
- Deep expertise in the Registered Apprenticeship system — 29 CFR Part 29, program standards development, work process schedules, RTI outlines, competency\-based and hybrid models, and experience scaling RA programs at the state or national level
- Demonstrated experience developing new apprenticeable occupations, occupational frameworks, or competency\-based training standards in partnership with employers and industry stakeholders
- Proven track record providing technical assistance to RA sponsors, employers, workforce boards, intermediaries, or state/federal apprenticeship agencies
- Strong technical writing skills with experience producing reports, publications, policy briefs, or technical assistance products for federal or practitioner audiences
- Experience developing sector\-based strategies to expand workforce training programs across multiple industries
- Proven ability to convene and engage diverse stakeholders: C\-suite executives, industry associations, unions, workforce boards, education partners, and federal/state agencies
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast\-paced environment and incorporate feedback quickly
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
- Prior SME experience on a DOL OA intermediary contract or ETA\-funded apprenticeship initiative
- Working knowledge of AI technologies and how they are being applied across industries — candidates with strong RA expertise and a willingness to build AI domain knowledge will be considered
- National network of relationships with employers, industry associations, and workforce partners
- Experience with the AOR tool, RAPIDS, CTE alignment, and industry certifications
- Familiarity with AI\-centric workforce trends, emerging AI occupations, or AI literacy frameworks
- Experience partnering with education systems on pre\-apprenticeship, career pathways, or credential alignment initiatives
