Qualifications:

Master's degree in Audiology from accredited univesity

Valid license to practice Audiology in North Carolina

Nature of Work

The Educational Audiologist will focus their practice on supporting students with hearing difficulties in an educational setting by evaluating the student’s hearing, listening, and auditory processing deficits that can affect their academic success, communication abilities and psychosocial well\-being. Educational Audiologist are part of a multidisciplinary team that develops an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan for a student with a hearing loss. The Educational Audiologist provides services and resources, as well as advocate for students with hearing deficits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Audiological follow\-up will be completed by the educational audiologist for failed hearing screenings
  • Insure the calibration of screening audiometers annually
  • Conduct comprehensive audiological evaluations (air conduction, bone conduction, impedance and speech thresholds) for those children failing screening test
  • Provide children with known hearing losses a complete audiological evaluation at least annually, and more frequently if indicated by evaluative data
  • Complete listening checks of the amplification equipment and individual aids used by hearing impaired children within each LEA on an annual basis
  • Provide consultant services related to the needs of the hearing\-impaired learner to teachers, administrators and parents
  • Provide data indicating the number of children receiving audiological diagnostic services, number of children indirectly served by parent and/or teacher counseling, and type and frequency of service provided through hearing screenings according to the requirements of the LEA or SEA.
  • Maintain records for all students with known hearing losses, preschool through school age, for the duration of the hearing loss or until the student reaches 21 years of age.
  • Develop and maintain liaison with community agencies that provide services complimentary to the schools’ audiometric services
  • Develop pupil referral procedures and cooperative service agreements with a local speech/language and hearing centers, medical facilities, hearing aid dispensers or other community agencies which provide needed/related services
  • Consult with school administrators and educators regarding the selection and purchase of auditory training equipment, and be responsible for its care
  • Participate in admission, placement and programming procedures as appropriate to each child and as consistent with procedures set forth by State regulations
  • Serve as a resource person in parent guidance and counseling programs, providing information on hearing loss, audiograms, hearing aids, acoustic environments, and speech and language activities for home programs
  • Coordinate school wide efforts to assist all pupils in the care and protection of their hearing

  • Specific skills related to proficient use of technology systems, computers and electronic devices and the ability to develop, implement, modify and assess student academic progress
  • Ability to independently problem\-solve, schedule daily activities, complete IEP updates as needed, maintain confidentiality
