EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent AND one of the following three scenarios listed below:

(A) Completion of the first semester of nursing clinical rotation or

(B) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)/Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or

(C) One year of hospital experience as a patient care technician.

Licenses and Certifications

(BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA). and

Must achieve validation of required core competencies and training within 6 months of employment

Preferred :

JOB DUTIES

PCT:

Provide patient care under the direction of nursing staff being certain to only perform tasks in which training and/or competency has been validated.

Collect, monitor, and document pertinent data relating to patient functioning and care to include but not limited to: intake and output, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure. Recognizes and immediately reports values outside normal parameters to the nurse.

Perform patient rounding being sure to report any changes in a patient's condition or behavior immediately to the nurse. Seeks assistance and guidance as needed to ensure that patient care is delivered in a safe, high quality and effective manner at all times.

Assess, identify, and monitor environmental, patient, and the patient's family needs in a respectful, positive, and timely manner to achieve satisfaction.

Perform basic hygiene care in accordance with the Department of Nursing policies, procedures and unit standards to include but not limited to pericare, oral care, daily hygiene, linen changes, skin changes, and foley care.

Transfer and transport patients in accordance with policies and procedures with specific consideration to age\-specific and safety needs.

Resolve patient concerns by initiating service recovery and immediately escalating patient, family, visitors and staff concerns through the chain of command.

Build meaning and sustainable relationships of trust through open and interactive communication with members of the healthcare team.

Prepare, update, and disseminate reports at the change of shift and when changes are noted in the patient's condition.

Support the administrative and clinical operations of assigned practice environment.

Orient new staff and students to work areas. Collaborates with other nursing staff and hospital employees to create an environment that is conducive to the retention of qualified personnel.

Maintain current compliance with ongoing annual education requirements (modules, classes and competencies).

Utilize downtime to assist others and/or to provide additional supportive measures to patients and/or patients' families within the respective patient care environment. Completes other duties as assigned. Performs in the role of sitter as needed, documents as required

Health Unit Coordinator:

Provides a responsive and helpful demeanor to the staff, physicians, patients and public in person or via telephone. Asks, "Can I help you?" Answers phone promptly and identifies self when answering phone. Customer service is number one concern.

Answers call lights immediately. Ensures that patient's request for assistance is communicated to the appropriate nursing staff in a timely manner. Communicates repeated requests to appropriate staff or the Charge Nurse as necessary.

Demonstrates working knowledge of medical terminology. Writes in legible handwriting on appropriate forms with required dates, times and signatures. Coordinates the scheduling of tests and procedures with the appropriate departments in an efficient and timely manner. Routes computer entries and paperwork in accordance with established practices.

Demonstrates appropriate prioritization of tasks.

Files reports and documents in the appropriate areas of the patient's medical record as established by Medical Record Department policies. Reviews medical records of discharged patients to ensure that all reports and documents within the record are stamped for the designated patient and in the order established by Medical Record Department policy.

Keeps unit stocked with supplies including forms. Checks par levels and orders supplies. Stocks, nursing station and puts ordered supplies away. Sends any equipment needing repair to BioMed, tracks return to unit.

Supports financial health of unit. Makes runs to lab, pharmacy or central supply as necessary.

Communicates appropriately with patients/families, physicians and staff. Relays information to appropriate personnel in an accurate and timely manner. Gives staff and charge nurse status reports on pending items. Immediately alerts nurse if patient/patient's family seems or is unhappy and you have not resolved the issue.

Assumes accountability for all actions in the workplace. Reports errors promptly.

Orients new staff and students to work areas. Collaborates with other nursing staff and hospital employees to create an environment that is conducive to the retention of qualified personnel.

Reads minutes of 100% of scheduled staff meetings and attends 100% of mandatory educational sessions. Remain 100% up to date on required communication i.e., E\-Mails, IAIM Modules, Staff meeting minutes and other communication sent from University Hospital Administration.

Utilizes downtime to complete assigned duties.

Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human\-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human\-subjects research records.
