  • Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Data Management, Behavioral Medicine, the Data Analyst provides computer programming, database management and analysis of data from multiple research projects and grants. Is accountable to the Principal Investigator(s) of the assigned research projects. Provides a variety of reports summarizing research data.

  • In collaboration with the Grant Research team, determine requirements of customized computer system to support the data needs of the research project. Provide input to the establishment of timelines to meet and support research goals and grant requirements. At start\-up attend staff meetings to formulate system design. Once in production, attend regular staff meetings or as necessary to maintain and modify system.

    Perform system analysis to determine grant specific custom application requirements. This includes determining project needs, such as task and contact tracking, automating randomization, determining permission levels, user preferences and operating system requirements.

    Responsible for the creation of database table structures in accordance with the forms and concepts of normalization.

    Designs and codes graphical user interface (GUI) screens, creating user\-friendly screens for use in local and remote data collection.

    Provide technical training and user support for research staff, and data entry personnel. Oversees the design, coding, testing and debugging of complex, multi\-user systems. Application systems may require bilingual capabilities for use by study participants.

    In collaboration with statistician, translate randomization procedure compliant with grant specifications into imbedded computer code as appropriate.

    Maintain quality assurance, confidentiality and security of data through the use of field ranges, default values, skip patterns and error checking. Implement and enforce procedures and permissions to insure integrity and accuracy of data. Implement and monitor data entry methods and data storage procedures to maintain subject/data confidentiality within Federal, Brown University Health and Department guidelines.

    Maintain and modify production systems as necessary. Correct programming errors. Produce data audit application systems as specified by grant and provide reports to monitor progress of data entry. Based on user feedback and program development, provide enhancements to assure optimal operation of data system, quality of data and user productivity.

    Prepare data set for descriptive statistical analysis. Perform preliminary analysis, which would include frequencies, means and sums.

    Run established scoring of standard measures. In collaboration with statistician and/or PI, contribute to calculation of non\-standardized measures.

    Provide ongoing status reports. At key time points provide preliminary analysis.

    Once data collection and data cleaning have been completed, provide access to finalized data set containing all variables and scoring. At a pre\-determined time point, provide the PI with archived database and dataset to free up network space. Maintain up\-to\-date technical knowledge through seminars, academic courses and professional literature.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/MIS or closely related field. Demonstrated knowledge of current computer technology and relational database management (RDBMS) including familiarity with normalization concepts. Demonstrated ability to apply programming skills to various software applications, such as SQL Server, Visual Basic, Access, R, Mplus, SAS and SPSS.

  • Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible information systems management background, including successful experience in programming, system analysis, data storage, documentation and management, preferably in a research or academic environment.
