### Position Summary:

The News and Media Manager is a primary institutional storyteller and sharer of institutional messaging, using written, visual and social tools to produce and share those stories, the news and messages. This position is responsible for communicating about Goshen College to internal and external constituents through professionally written communications, shared through traditional (news releases) and electronic (web and social media) channels. The News \& Media Manager is responsible for media relations and assists with photography and video production.

### Primary Responsibilities

* STORYTELLING, NEWS WRITING \& EDITING

+ Planning, writing and editing feature and news stories to help achieve increased positive awareness and visibility of Goshen College locally, regionally and nationally.

+ Distribute news releases and maintain media lists, including for sharing hometown news.

+ Attend campus events and report on campus news, some of which may take place outside of normal business hours.

+ Produce monthly “Bulletin Points” emails for alumni, donors, parents and employees to stay engaged with the news and opportunities at GC.

+ Produce, in cooperation with Graphic Designer, Events and Athletics, a monthly schedule of events on campus.

+ Curate and maintain content to keep goshen.edu/news relevant and up to date, with a goal of refreshing newsfeed weekly.

+ Assist the Director of Communications and Marketing and/or the Vice President of Institutional Advancement during crises or high\-profile GC events on/off campus – contribute to problem\-solving and demonstrate ability to communicate honestly without compromising institutional interests.

+ Serve as Assistant Editor (editing news, writing features and alumni profiles) for the biannual GC magazine, The Bulletin.

+ Work closely with the team from the Communications and Marketing Office, as well as others on campus, to identify creative new ways to promote Goshen College. Bring enthusiasm for GC initiatives and help identify better and more effective ways of delivering news to appropriate publics.

* MEDIA RELATIONS

+ Respond promptly and appropriately to media requests, including nights and weekends as needed.

+ Initiate plans for GC opinion/editorial service and features service for media placements.

+ As needed, assist campus community members in relating to the media and public image development.

+ Establish and cultivate positive, professional relationships with media personnel, including local, regional, national, online and church media organizations.

+ Seek regular contact with student leaders, faculty and staff to identify compelling stories for pitching to media and sharing in print and electronic mediums.

* EVENTS PROMOTION AND SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT

+ Ensure timely and accurate implementation of events promotion: monthly events posters, monthly events emails, paid promotion, event releases, online calendar posting, etc.

+ Produce, in cooperation with Graphic Designer, Events and Athletics, a monthly schedule of events on campus.

+ Ensure timely and accurate implementation related to any promotional emails needing to be distributed by the office or for campus clients.

+ Draft and/or proofread marketing and communications copy as needed for various channels (e.g. email, website, digital ads, radio, print, news releases, alumni magazine).

+ Initiate design requests with the Graphic Designer to develop needed artwork for news and feature stories.

+ Assist the Digital Media Specialist as needed with sharing Goshen College news and stories content on social media

* PHOTOGRAPHY \& VIDEO MANAGEMENT

+ Seek photo opportunities for local media (both print and electronic) and facilitate media needs. Work with local media photographers at specific events.

+ Assist the Digital Media Specialist as needed with editing, distributing and filing photos and videos, particularly in support of features and news stories.

* MISCELLANEOUS

+ Review and approve submissions to the Communicator email each day as needed, making sure they meet established guidelines for inclusion. This task may be delegated to another individual in the department.

+ Regular administrative tasks: Monitor the office’s email account and coordinate office mail.

+ Recruit, train and supervise writing student workers/interns during the school year and the summer, meeting with them regularly, distributing information and other materials and editing their work.

### Education \& Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in public relations, communications, journalism, business or a related field.
  • 1\-2 years of experience working in a nonprofit or higher education organization is preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe products preferred, primarily Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere and InDesign.
  • Experience with DSLR camera preferred
  • Some basic HTML and web editing knowledge, including experience with WordPress and MailChimp, or willingness to learn
  • ### Work Conditions

  • Work involves light lifting (up to 25 pounds), prolonged sitting and use of a keyboard.
  • Moderate phone use and operation of copier and other standard office equipment.
  • Filing of material is a routine duty.
  • Occasional travel (in\-town errand and rare overnight travel).
  • Ability to complete primary tasks by viewing computer screen(s) for the majority of any given work day (extensive use of computer technology).
