Staff Engineer
Township of Maplewood – Engineering Department
The Township of Maplewood is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Staff Engineer to join our Engineering Department. Under the direction of the Township Engineer and Assistant Township Engineer, the Staff Engineer supports a wide range of municipal infrastructure projects, including buildings, roadways, stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, and recreational facilities. This position combines fieldwork, design, project coordination, and administrative responsibilities in a fast‑paced, community‑focused environment.
Salary \& Schedule
* Salary Range: $75,000 – $80,000 (commensurate with qualifications)
* Status: Full‑time position
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the design of Township projects using AutoCAD, including roadway resurfacing/reconstruction, pedestrian improvements (curb ramps, sidewalks), and stormwater infrastructure.
- Conduct routine site inspections of active construction projects and prepare detailed field reports.
- Review engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates; provide comments based on applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
- Review contractor and vendor submittals for compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare cost estimates for in‑house projects, with familiarity in regional pricing.
- Operate basic surveying equipment (transit and rod) and prepare grading plans for curb ramps and stormwater improvements.
- Perform quantity take‑offs and process project invoices.
- Prepare and submit grant applications (NJDOT Municipal Aid, CDBG, NJDEP Green Acres, etc.) and navigate online grant portals.
- Attend public and private meetings (in‑person and virtual) and communicate effectively about active projects.
- Respond to resident inquiries and explain Township policies and engineering practices clearly and professionally.
- Perform administrative and clerical tasks including document control, correspondence, scheduling, and data entry.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field from an ABET‑accredited institution (required).
- A Master’s of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field may be substituted for one (1\) year of experience.
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license required.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Earth.
- Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, and engineering principles.
- Ability to prepare RFPs and public bidding documents.
- Ability to use basic surveying instruments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare professional correspondence.
- Ability to track multiple projects and maintain organized records.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and the public while maintaining professionalism and firmness when needed.
- Ability to learn and use various electronic and manual information systems.
- Strong command of the English language; proficiency in Spanish, ASL, or Braille is a plus.

Minimum Requirements
Education
Experience
* Preferred: One (1\) year of experience in the civil engineering industry, including construction observation, project management, and digital drafting.
Licensure
* E.I.T. certification (Engineer‑in‑Training) is strongly preferred and will receive special consideration.
