Our Impact:

Each year, Legal Aid of Marin (LAM) provides thousands of Marin residents with direct civil legal services, education, and resources. Our priorities include: recovering wages for workers; advocating on behalf of tenants and enforcing renter protections; providing legal services aimed at homelessness prevention and housing preservation; restoring driver’s licenses and alleviating poverty through the Marin Community Court program; providing legal services to Marin’s immigrant communities; increasing access to pro bono legal services in partnership with the private bar; and connecting Marin residents to local community\-based organizations providing access to social services. Our Staff works collaboratively to bring services to the communities we serve by engaging in regular outreach in partnership with community\-based organizations across Marin. We practice client\-centered and trauma\-informed lawyering, working passionately to increase Marin County residents’ access to the civil justice system. We are determined to make Marin a more equitable place for everyone.

Summary:

LAM seeks a mission\-aligned and passionate bilingual legal assistant to support LAM’s recently launched immigration legal services program. Reporting to the Legal Director with oversight by the Executive Director, the Bilingual Legal Assistant for Immigration Legal Services will support LAM’s Immigration Justice Staff Attorney and Pro Bono Manager in providing place\-based and community\-informed legal services to marginalized Marin immigrants. LAM seeks a legal assistant who welcomes the opportunity to support the design and implementation of a new legal services program to address critical community need in a rapidly evolving environment.

Essential Functions:

· Under the supervision of the organization’s Immigration Justice Staff Attorney and Pro Bono Manager, support the provision of client\-centered and community\-informed legal services, education, consultations, and available referrals to marginalized immigrants living in Marin County.

· Conduct off\-site outreach, intake, client interviews, factual analysis, legal research, hearing preparation, and other client case related tasks.

· Interpret between Spanish and English to support non\-Spanish speaking staff from intake to case closure.

· Staff and provide administrative support to Immigration Justice Staff Attorney and Pro Bono Manager at offsite clinic, outreach, and education events including one (1\)\- eight (8\) hour day per week at North Marin Community Services and additional time at other community\-based organizations as needed.

· Support training of interns and volunteers as needed.

· Undergo training and professional development as required by organizational leadership.

· Attend convenings, conferences, and events as required by organizational leadership.

· Keep records in LAM’s case management system and other trackers as needed to measure case outcomes, provide accurate data to funders, ensure accurate timekeeping, meet ethical requirements as set forth by the State Bar of California, and support organizational development and fundraising.

· Record and provide data to support organizational reporting requirements and requests from the Programs Officer and Executive Director.

· Complete additional mission\-aligned tasks supporting LAM’s expansion into immigration legal services.

Qualifications:

· Demonstrated commitment to LAM’s mission and serving marginalized and underserved Marin communities.

· Fully bilingual in English and Spanish, both spoken and written, with the ability to interpret between languages from intake to case closure.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Ability to build trust, show empathy and understanding, ask sensitive questions regarding persecution, and harm suffered in clients’ respective native countries.

· Ability to perform tasks and meet deadlines in a fast\-paced environment with quickly shifting priorities.

· Ability to prioritize tasks, communicate proactively with supervisors, and keep track of legal deadlines.

· Strong organizational skills and ability to accurately perform detail\-oriented work

· Ability to take direction from attorneys and provide quality and timely work product.

· Ability and willingness to learn basic immigration laws, processes, and available legal remedies.

· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respectfully communicate and collaborate with clients, attorneys, coworkers, community partners, and stakeholders.

· Willingness to accept feedback and address areas for professional growth;

· Ability to multitask, be proactive, and work independently.

· Excellent computer skills, including data entry and Microsoft Office;

· Must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance; and

· Knowledge of Marin County’s resources and organizations.

Compensation:

Pay is $31 per hour (40\-hour work week). This is a non\-exempt and full\-time position. Overtime hours are permitted, but only at the discretion of LAM’s Executive Director. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan participation, and employer contribution to retirement after six months of employment.

Remote Work:

This position requires three (3\) days of work in person at LAM’s office located in San Rafael, California. The Legal Director may authorize remote work for up to two (2\) days per week. At present, two (2\) days per week must be performed at LAM’s office in San Rafael, California. One (1\) day per week must be performed at North Marin Community Services’ campus in Novato (northern Marin County). Remote work is not guaranteed and is subject to change in light of organizational and client needs.
