Are you currently enrolled as a college graduate student and studying geology, engineering geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, water resource engineering, data science, or closely related field? Do you want to gain work experience supporting innovative and technical basin characterization related projects to help California achieve its goal of climate and water resiliency? Do you have strong technical, computational, analytical and communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment? Then the Department of Water Resources may be for you. We are seeking an individual that is self\-driven, creative, and interested in groundwater data analysis, management, and advanced visualization. Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature. We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

All applicants for Student Assistant positions must meet the following departmental eligibility requirements:

  • Enrolled in nine (9\) semester/eight (8\) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6\) semester/four (4\) quarter units for graduate students.
  • Achieved a 2\.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  • Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.
  • Student Assistant employees are paid hourly and are limited to 1500 hours per 12 consecutive months.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Seeking individuals who maintain regular, consistent, predictable work hours (16 hours/week minimum), work cooperatively with others, and exercise good judgment. The incumbent must have excellent technical and communication skills, be organized and detail oriented. Expertise in geology, geophysics, water resource engineering and/or hydrogeology, and an understanding of coding, machine learning, data management, data analysis techniques, and geographic information systems is desired. The master’s or PhD desired focuses areas are Geology, Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Water Resources Engineering, Data Science Engineering, or closely related field.
