POSITION PURPOSE: South Dakota Mines is looking for a motivated individual to fill a Senior Accountant position and join our finance team. South Dakota Mines operates under the constitutional authority of the South Dakota Board of Regents. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant performs professional‑level accounting work requiring thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards. This position is responsible for reconciliations, preparation and review of journal entries, support of institutional financial reporting and compliance, and assistance with audit and year‑end close activities. The Senior Accountant works collaboratively within the Finance Office to support accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations in accordance with state, federal, and Board of Regents requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly reconciliations across institutional and state financial systems.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries and accounting adjustments.
  • Assist with year‑end close processes and internal control documentation.
  • Prepare schedules and data for institutional, state, and federal financial reports.
  • Support internal and external audits and compliance activities.
  • Review accounting transactions and corrections as directed.
  • Maintain accurate financial records in compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide professional accounting support within the Finance Office
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field and five (5\) years of professional accounting experience (A combination of relevant education and experience may also be considered)
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Experience in using accounting systems and financial reporting tools.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and related applications
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in governmental accounting or higher education finance
  • Experience in performing complex reconciliations and financial analysis.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of:

  • Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Governmental accounting practices and reporting requirements
  • Ability to:

  • Analyze and reconcile complex financial information.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
