DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/TOWN ENGINEER
Position will remain open until filled.
The Town of Wilton seeks a Public Works Director/Town Engineer for its Public Works Department serving a population in excess of 18,000\. The Public Works Director is a critical department head position that, under the general direction of the First Selectman and Town Administrator, is responsible for the total operations of the Public Works Department, including the Highway division, Town Facilities, and Transfer Station (municipal solid waste, bulky waste, and recycling), and tasked with the goal of ensuring public infrastructure that supports the safety and well\-being of the public; serves as the Town Engineer; oversees the Road Improvement Program; monitors construction of new subdivision roads; provides advisory engineering review for sewer, stormwater, and water system construction; assists in the planning and engineering of new Town roads, Town facility construction, and water, stormwater, and sewerage systems; oversees solid waste handling; responds to emergency situations involving Town personnel, equipment, buildings, roads, and the general welfare of the public; and assures safe work practices and work environment for Town personnel and the public at large.
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Advanced degree desirable. Professional Engineer’s license in State of Connecticut,
- Minimum ten (10\) years of experience in public works or construction field with five (5\) involving supervisory experience in the management of clerical and professional personnel or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Thorough knowledge of, and ability to apply, engineering procedures and methods in public works construction and operation and road, bridges, stormwater management, and highway maintenance;
- Working knowledge of and experience with solid waste and recycling collection and transfer station methods and procedures;
- Working knowledge of building and facilities maintenance and repair;
- Working knowledge of fleet management;
- Ability to effectively supervise and manage subordinate staff and maintain cooperative working relationships with same;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town agencies and staff, local and State officials, and the general public;
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply Federal, State and local laws, regulations and standards relating to Public Works and public administration;
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to use engineering, financial, management, and database computer systems and software, including Excel, Powerpoint, and Word software and computer aided design (“CAD”), geographic information (“GIS”), and enterprise resource planning (“ERP”) systems;
- Physical ability to reach remote and accessibly\-challenging work sites for inspections, which may include bending, lifting, stretching, and climbing;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to make difficult decisions within deadlines in an environment that may have limited resources and competing claims; and
- A valid driver’s license.

The successful candidate will possess excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills, and be able to exercise considerable independent judgment while performing duties. The successful candidate must be hands\-on and available for evening board meetings, either virtually or in person.
Salary is competitive and reflective of the scope of responsibilities and the successful candidate’s experience, with a starting salary range of $165,000 to $180,000 DOQ. Benefits include the Connecticut Partnership Plan 2\.0 for health and a defined contribution retirement plan.
