Summary
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Verifies inmate indigence status and determines eligibility; Collects, screens, and organizes requests submitted by inmates for hygiene items;
- Prepares unit distribution list and distributes basic hygiene, vital, and correspondence materials;
- Assists inmates in maintaining ties with their families and/or external contacts which may include attorneys, courts, parole/probation officers, landlords, employers, and other social and federal agencies;
- Provides notary services to the inmates, their families, internal and external agencies;
- Refers inmates and their families with appropriate internal and external social services agencies by identifying needs and provides limited crisis intervention when necessary;
- Refers inmates to the appropriate internal agencies to assist with facilitating relaying message to inmates in the event of a death in the family, funeral home visits and hospital/hospice visits;
- Answers telephone inquires and identifies legitimate emergency situations and determines course of action, which may include relaying pertinent messages to the inmates making courtesy welfare calls to inmates’ families;
- Responds to grievances filed by inmates; Performs administrative duties such as processing incoming mail and ordering supplies;
- Prepares, compiles, and maintains logs and prepares weekly activity sheets;
- Performs related duties as required.
- High School degree or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, and six months of general office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Skill in operating basic office equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to maintain records, documents and compile and organize reports; ability to establish and maintain effective communication with hostile, abusive or irate individuals; ability to establish working relationships with co\-workers,
- Texas Department of Criminal Justice and County employees, outside agencies, attorneys, court officials, law enforcement agencies and the general public. Physical requirements include occasionally lifting/carrying 5 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to handling, sitting, standing, reaching, and twisting to perform the essential functions. Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
- Primarily in a correctional facility with occasional exposure to hostile or violent individuals.
