Position Overview
The Cemetery Sexton is responsible for the daily operations, maintenance, and coordination of all cemetery activities. This role ensures that every interment, memorial placement, and grounds of operation is executed with precision, professionalism, and respect.
This position requires strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, accuracy, and care.
Key Responsibilities – Cemetery Operations \& Coordination
- Oversee and coordinate all burials, entombments, and inurnments
- Accurately locate and verify grave spaces prior to services
- Prepare burial sites, including layout, staking, and setup
- Ensure all services are executed on time and according to plan
- Maintain burial and plot records with 100% accuracy
- Coordinate with funeral directors and staff on scheduling and logistics
- Maintain cemetery grounds to a high standard
- Oversee mowing, trimming, leveling, and seasonal upkeep
- Inspect grounds for safety hazards
- Oversee snow removal and weather\-related preparation
- Assist with maintenance of equipment and tools in clean, working condition
- Coordinate installation of headstones and memorials
- Verify placement accuracy
- Inspect for quality and alignment
- Communicate with vendors and families regarding timelines
- Maintain accurate cemetery maps and interment records
- Track lot ownership and availability
- Ensure documentation is complete and filed properly
- Utilize company systems for scheduling and recordkeeping
- Interact with families professionally and respectfully
- Assist with locating graves and answering questions
- Support funeral services onsite
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in cemetery, landscaping, or construction preferred
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to operate or learn equipment
- Basic computer skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Physical labor including lifting 50\+ lbs
- Operation of equipment and tools
- Maintain a clean, organized work environment
- Ensure zero errors in grave location or records
- Be punctual and reliable
- Communicate clearly with team members
- Uphold company standards in every service
