Position Summary:
The Quality Technician supports production by performing inspections, tests, and documentation to ensure welded and manufactured products meet internal specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards. This role plays a key part in maintaining product integrity, reducing defects, and driving continuous improvement across the plant.
Job Duties:
- Perform in\-process and final inspections on welded assemblies, fabricated components, and raw materials
- Verify weld quality using visual inspection, dimensional checks, gauges, fixtures, and NDT methods (VT, PT, MT if certified)
- Inspect welds for defects such as cracks, porosity, undercut, incomplete fusion, and distortion
- Check dimensions using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM equipment, or other measuring tools
- Conduct hardness, tensile, or other mechanical tests as needed
- Maintain accurate inspection records, test results, and quality reports
- Complete nonconformance reports (NCRs) and ensure proper tagging, segregation, and documentation of defective material
- Support preparation and execution of PPAPs, control plans, and first article inspections (FAI)
- Update quality logs, SPC charts, and traceability documentation
- Audit weld parameters, WPS adherence, and welder certifications to ensure compliance
- Support calibration of gauges and measurement devices
- Assist in root cause analysis and corrective actions using tools such as 5\-Why, Fishbone, or 8D
- Participate in internal audits, Gemba walks, and layered process audits
- Work closely with welding, fabrication, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify and resolve quality issues
- Communicate defects or process deviations promptly to supervisors and production personnel
- Train operators on quality standards, inspection methods, and proper documentation
- Other duties as assigned
- Experience with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or similar quality management systems
- Familiarity with SPC, PPAP, FMEA, and Lean Manufacturing concepts
- Experience using CMMs or other advanced metrology equipment
- Strong computer proficiency (Excel, ERP, QMS systems)
- Previous experience in manufacturing, welding, or quality inspection
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, GD\&T, and technical specifications
- Strong understanding of welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, Spot, etc.)
- Proficiency with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges)
- Solid documentation, data\-entry, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
- High attention to detail and strong problem\-solving skills
- Ability to obtain AWS CWI or ASNT VT level II within one year of employment
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check, drug screen and E\-verify
Education:
A high school diploma or GED is required; trade school or military experience a plus. AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) or Visual Testing Level I/II certification.
