- Minimum of three (3\) years of Satisfactory (or Advance\-equivalent) experience at the NYC Department of Education
- Minimum of three (3\) years teaching developmentally appropriate physical education in an urban environment.
- Experience designing and delivering professional development for a variety of adult learners (school staff, teachers, administrators, district teams, etc.).
- Deep understanding of National PE Standards and NYSED PE learning standards.
- Versed in a variety of curricular and instructional models for PE.
- Knowledge of appropriate instructional practices and current trends in PE, school wellness policy, and/or public health.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Framework for Teaching and its application in PE.
- Familiarity with DOE\-recommended PE curricular resources and assessments including NYC FITNESSGRAM.
- Experience using technology, web\-based platforms, and other technology\-based developmentally appropriate instructional tools for teaching all students.

- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and other related applications, including various video conferencing applications and survey management software.
- Design and deliver professional development opportunities for PE teachers Citywide to support high\-quality PE through in\-person, virtual, or asynchronous learning opportunities.
- Provide instructional support to teacher teams, school\- or district\-based instructional leadership teams to improve learning outcomes for all students in PE.
- Facilitate professional learning communities either in person or virtually for PE teachers to share resources and promote appropriate instructional practices including culturally relevant practices and other relevant trends or applicable programs.
- Provide follow\-up support to training participants via phone calls, emails, video conference chats, or any relative video conferencing platforms, to build an understanding of post\-training implementation and provide instructional or technical support as needed.
- Assist PE teachers, teacher teams, school\- or district\-based instructional leadership teams, with planning and facilitation of PE professional learning opportunities that promote standards\-based instruction, research\-based instructional practices and align with adult learning theory and practices.
- Support in maintaining the accuracy of the NYC K\-12 Physical Education Scope and Sequence, and training PE teachers, teacher teams, school\- or district\-based instructional leadership teams on the use of the documents.
- Review and recommend PE materials to share with schools in the content areas of social\-emotional learning competencies, health\-related fitness, skill\-related fitness, injury prevention, nutrition, motor development, motor learning, and a variety of traditional and non\-traditional sports or physical activities. Document and share successful implementation strategies with central, districts, or school\-based administrators or teachers.
- Work closely with the OSWP Events and Professional Learning Team to coordinate training preparation and delivery, scheduling, registration, and communication with participants.
- Collaborate with Director of Equitable Program Implementation to update Move\-to\-Improve classroom based physical activity program curricular and instructional resources with current trends in PE and alignment with national or state standards.
- Provide technical support to teachers through one\-on\-one or small group discussions on how to access and/or enter students’ scores into the NYC FITNESSGRAM application and provide feedback to the NYC FITNESSGRAM Program Manager or team.
- Assist in the collection, entry, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to support project deliverables and systemic program planning.
- Work closely with other NYC Public School offices or departments that promote appropriate, culturally relevant instructional practices, curriculum development, and assessment practices, as well as new technologies or applications that impact PE citywide.
- Work closely with the OSWP Implementation Team to provide guidance and resources to district leadership, school administrators, teachers, and school\-based personnel to increase the capacity of each district or school to develop or enhance sustainable PE programs and support individual district or school wellness efforts.
- Coordinate improvements in PE instruction and wellness by customizing OSWP services and programs to meet the unique needs of district leadership, principals, teachers, and their respective school communities, including strategies to engage families.
- Support district and school staff in leveraging high\-quality PE instruction that strengthen student engagement, belonging, attendance, social\-emotional learning, and equitable access to wellness opportunities for all students.
- Help districts or schools strengthen opportunities for physical activity through networking and working collaboratively with a wide range of NYC community resources, including the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, local community\-based organizations, and other international, national, state, city partners or vendors.
- Assist with the preparation of reports.

Position Summary:
Teaching students to take care of their minds and their bodies builds a foundation for lifelong learning and ensures they have the skills needed to be physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally healthy. The New York City Department of Education’s Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) supports school communities in building strong structures and rich environments where Health Education and Physical Education (PE) thrive, and guides schools in teaching nearly one million students what they need to know to make healthy, informed choices now and throughout their lives.
Recognizing that every student has a right to quality PE and Health Education instruction, as well as opportunities to engage in wellness\-related activities inside and outside of the classroom, we believe:
The PE Instructional Specialist supports school educators Citywide through the design and delivery of professional learning experiences, that promote and reinforce the delivery of standards\-based, developmentally appropriate, all\-inclusive, and culturally responsive PE. Additional responsibilities include providing training follow\-up support, drafting and sharing instructional resources, and staying abreast of current PE rules and regulations, instructional appropriate practices, and curricular and planning resources for PE.
