Job Description:

PATIENT POPULATION:

The patient population served is all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the department leader, the Monitor Technician is responsible for performing and organizing the clerical activities necessary to maintain the medical record and coordinating on\-going activities within the assigned unit. Continuously monitors the ECG patterns of all patients including those remotely monitored. Facilitates the documentation of ECG strips. In conjunction with the Registered Nurse, evaluates ECG rhythms via cardiac intervals and alerts the Registered Nurse to changes of life\-threatening alterations in the patient’s ECG patterns, taking into consideration the age of the patient in question, i.e. adult and geriatric.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call\-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on\-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker, you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and should have the knowledge and skills typically acquired through a high school education or equivalent experience. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The individual must fall into one of the following categories if hired after 5/20/2025:(1\) Have successfully completed the Skills Lab and fundamentals of bedside care portion of their L.V.N. or R.N. program; or (2\) have their current CNA License; or (3\) have an EMT license. Experience as Unit Clerk/Monitor Tech in an acute care setting is highly preferred. Must have a basic understanding of Medical Terminology.

Proficient in reading and interpreting various documents, including safety guidelines, operational procedures, maintenance instructions, and manuals. Capable of preparing routine reports and correspondence as needed. Ability to speak and write in English, with the ability to write clearly, comprehend verbal and written instructions, and follow directions accurately.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must fall into one of the following categories if hired after 5/20/2025:(1\) Have successfully completed the Skills Lab and fundamentals of bedside care portion of their L.V.N. or R.N. program; or (2\) have their current CNA License; or (3\) have an EMT license.
  • Must have and maintain current
  • American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands\-on patient care.

  • Attend Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 1 year of hire date and maintain as required by state law.
  • Must take and successfully pass basic arrhythmia recognition certification class within 90 days of hire.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Regular, punctual attendance and physical presence at the assigned work location and workstation, ready to perform job duties at the scheduled start time.
  • Utilizing appropriate telephone etiquette, answers phone promptly, screens, refers calls in accordance to policy and dispatches messages as requested. Initiates phone calls for nursing staff to Physicians, Nursing Administration, UR, etc.
  • Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology.
  • Demonstrates dependability and professional image by, but not limited to, adhering to dress code, reporting to duty on time, and using benefit time appropriately, maintain safe and clean work area and promoting patient and visitor satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates reverence for life, respect for inherent dignity and worth of each individual, maintenance of patient privacy and confidentiality, and adherence to the Joint Commission “National Patient Safety Goals for hospitals” as defined by scope of practice.
  • Documentation reflects compliance with established hospital policies and procedures.
  • Immediately notifies the Registered Nurse caring for the affected patient, or Charge Nurse when available of any new arrhythmias or changes. This includes notification to the Medical Surgical department Registered Nurses for all remote monitored patients.
  • Complies and reports daily data regarding census, patient admissions and discharges and labor information, as directed Demonstrates the working knowledge of how to correctly complete forms including consents, transfers, deaths, AMA, QM/RM (Quality Management/Risk Management) reports in Medi\-tech, etc.
  • OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • On shift assigned, the Monitor Technician is responsible to follow the workflow process according to Emergency Department Services.
  • Promptly and professionally responds to all patient call lights and refers patient needs to appropriate staff.
  • Is flexible when asked to assist with transportation of patients, equipment and supplies, after ensuring there will be a staff member at station to answer phones.
  • Demonstrates the working knowledge of how to correctly complete forms and/or computer entry consents, transfers, deaths, AMA, QM/RM (Quality Management/Risk Management) reports in Medi\-tech, etc.
  • Alerts Charge Nurse and/or House Supervisor of undue delays in patient care.
  • Monitors and coordinates flow of visitors in and out of departments.
  • Maintains a master list of all patients in a log book with patient/Nurse assignments. Telemetry has a red log book. ICU will use the Q12 hour staffing paperwork for these entries. Completes and maintains staffing and quality binders while on shift.
  • Demonstrates reverence for life, respect for inherent dignity and worth of each individual, and maintenance of patient privacy and confidentiality.

Will display understanding and knowledge base required to accomplish ambulance “ETA call in”.
